Which Country Exports the Most Sulphite Chemical Wood Pulp in the World?

In 2016, approx. 709K tonnes of sulphite wood pulp were exported worldwide; growing by 8% against the previous year figure. In general, sulphite wood pulp exports continue to indicate a deep decline. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015, when export increased by 9% against the previous year level. Global sulphite wood pulp export peaked of 1.1M tonnes in 2007; however, from 2008 to 2016, it stood at a somewhat lower level.

In value terms, sulphite wood pulp exports amounted to $439M in 2016. Overall, sulphite wood pulp exports continue to indicate a drastic deduction. Global sulphite wood pulp export peaked of $825M in 2007; however, from 2008 to 2016, it failed to regain its strength.

Sulphite Wood Pulp Exports By Country

In 2016, Canada (336K tonnes) was the key exporter for sulphite wood pulp, committing 47% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Portugal (84K tonnes), Germany (84K tonnes), the U.S. (50K tonnes), and Sweden (43K tonnes), together mixed up 37% share of total sulphite wood pulp exports. The following exporters - New Zealand (27K tonnes), and Russia (25K tonnes) occupied near 7% of total exports, each.

From 2007 to 2016, average annual rates of growth with regard to sulphite wood pulp exports from Canada stood at +3.7%. At the same time, New Zealand (+60.3%), and Sweden (+4.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, New Zealand emerged as the fastest growing importer/exporter in the world, with a CAGR of +60.3% from 2007-2016. By contrast, Germany (-1.1%), Portugal (-2.1%), Russia (-2.4%), and the U.S. (-13.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. The U.S. (20%), and Portugal (3%) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the global exports, while Sweden, New Zealand, and Canada saw its share reduced by -2.0%, -3.7%, and -13.3% from 2007 to 2016, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the largest sulphite wood pulp markets worldwide were Canada ($169M), Germany ($106M) and Portugal ($57M), with a combined 76% share of global exports.The U.S., Sweden, New Zealand and Russia lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 14%.

New Zealand (+57.8% per year) experienced the highest growth rate of sulphite wood pulp exports, among the main exporting countries, over the last 9 years, while the other global leaders experienced mixed trends in the exports figures.

Sulphite Wood Pulp Export Prices By Country

In 2016, the average export price for sulphite wood pulp amounted to $619 per tonne, standing approx. at the previous year level. Overall, sulphite wood pulp export price continues to indicate a slight setback. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2010, when export increased by 24% year-to-year. In that year, average sulphite wood pulp export price attained its maximum level of $769 per tonne. From 2011 to 2016, growth of average sulphite wood pulp export price failed to regain its strength.

Export prices varied noticeably by country of destination. the country with the highest export prices was Germany ($1,264 per tonne), while Russia ($314 per tonne) was among the lowest.

From 2007 to 2016, the most notable growth rate of sulphite wood pulp export prices was attained by Portugal (+0.7% per year), while the other global leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.
