Which Country Exports the Most Stationery in the World?

In 2016, approx. 485K tonnes of stationery were exported worldwide; coming up by 14% against the previous year level. In general, stationery exports continue to indicate a strong expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013, when export increased by 137% against the previous year level. Global stationery export peaked in 2016, and are likely to continue its growth in the near future.

In value terms, stationery exports stood at $6.2B in 2016. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +1.3% over the period from 2007 to 2016; however, the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations being recorded over the period under review. Over the period under review, global stationery exports reached its maximum level in 2016, and are likely to continue its growth in the near future.

Stationery Exports By Country

China (269K tonnes) was the key exporting country with an export of around 269K tonnes, which recorded 56% of total exports. Japan (57K tonnes) held a 12% share (based on tonnes) of global stationery exports, which put it in second place, following India (5%). France (19K tonnes), Germany (18K tonnes), Italy (11K tonnes), Mexico (11K tonnes), and Malaysia (8.4K tonnes) followed a long way behind this figure.

From 2007 to 2016, average annual rates of growth with regard to stationery exports from China stood at +18.6%. At the same time, India (+24.3%), Japan (+8.9%), France (+4.7%), and Malaysia (+4.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, India emerged as the fastest growing importer/exporter in the world, with a CAGR of +24.3% from 2007-2016. Germany, and Mexico experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Italy (-5.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of India (-4.6%), Japan (-6.2%), and China (-43.6%) decreased significantly, the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the largest stationery markets worldwide were China ($1.7B), Japan ($895M) and Germany ($782M), together comprising 56% of global exports. These countries were followed by France, Mexico, India, Italy and Malaysia, which together accounted for a further 18%.

India (+8.2% per year) recorded the highest growth rate of stationery exports, in terms of the main exporting countries, over the last 9 years, while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Stationery Export Prices By Country

In 2016, the average export price for stationery amounted to $13 per kg, dropping by -8.4% against the previous year. Overall, stationery export price continues to indicate a deep descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014, when export increased by 31% against the previous year level. Global stationery export peaked of $31 per kg in 2010; however, from 2011 to 2016, it stood at a somewhat lower level.

Export prices varied noticeably by country of destination. the country with the highest export prices was Germany ($44 per kg), while China ($6,464 per tonne) was among the lowest.

From 2007 to 2016, the most notable growth rate of stationery export prices was attained by Mexico (+2.4% per year), while the other global leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.
