Which Country Exports the Most Sewing Thread in the World?

In 2016, the amount of sewing thread exported worldwide totaled 116K tonnes, waning by -5.5% against the previous year level. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.6% over the period from 2007 to 2016; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations being observed over the period under review. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2008, when export increased by 21% from the previous year level. Over the period under review, global sewing thread exports attained its maximum volume of 127K tonnes in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2016, it stood at a somewhat lower level.

In value terms, sewing thread exports amounted to $1.1B in 2016. Overall, sewing thread exports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, global sewing thread exports attained its maximum level of $1.3B in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2016, it failed to regain its strength.

Sewing Thread Exports By Country

In 2016, China (57K tonnes) represented the largest exporter for sewing thread, making up 49% of total exports. The U.S. (11K tonnes) took a 10% share (based on tonnes) of global sewing thread exports, which put it in second place, following Germany (6%). Romania (3.7K tonnes), Italy (3.2K tonnes), China, Hong Kong SAR (3.2K tonnes), South Korea (2.7K tonnes), Turkey (2.6K tonnes), Hungary (2K tonnes), Thailand (1.8K tonnes), and Japan (1.8K tonnes) held the mild share of total exports.

Exports from China increased at an average annual rate of +10.4% from 2007 to 2016. At the same time, Hungary (+25.6%), Romania (+7.4%), and Japan (+1.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Hungary emerged as the fastest growing importer/exporter in the world, with a CAGR of +25.6% from 2007-2016. The U.S., and Italy experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Thailand (-1.0%), Turkey (-1.8%), China, Hong Kong SAR (-2.4%), Germany (-2.9%), and South Korea (-5.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Germany (2%) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the global exports, while Romania, Hungary, and China saw its share reduced by -1.5%, -1.5%, and -29.0% from 2007 to 2016, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, China ($348M), Germany ($177M) and the U.S. ($120M) appeared as the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2016, together comprising 57% of global exports.China, Hong Kong SAR, Romania, Hungary, Japan, Italy, Turkey, South Korea and Thailand lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 22%.

Hungary (+24.1% per year) had the highest rates of growth with regard to the sewing thread exports, in terms of the main exporting countries, over the last 9 year period, while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Sewing Thread Export Prices By Country

The average sewing thread export price stood at $9,691 per tonne in 2016, remaining stable against the previous year level. Overall, sewing thread export price continues to indicate a mild decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2010, when export increased by 18% y-o-y. Over the period under review, average sewing thread export price attained its maximum level of $11 per kg in 2007; however, from 2008 to 2016, it stood at a somewhat lower level.

Export prices varied noticeably by country of destination. the country with the highest export prices was Germany ($26 per kg), while Thailand ($5,539 per tonne) was among the lowest.

From 2007 to 2016, the most notable growth rate of sewing thread export prices was attained by China, Hong Kong SAR (+5.1% per year), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
