Which Country Exports the Most Semi-Chemical Wood Pulp in the World?

IndexBox has just published a new report "World: Semi-Chemical Wood Pulp, Pulp Of Fibers Other Than Wood - Market Report. Analysis and Forecast to 2025". Here is a summary of the report's key findings.

In 2016, the global imports of semi-chemical wood pulp totaled 3.4M tonnes, coming down by -1.5% against the previous year level. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.3% over the period from 2007 to 2016- however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2010, when imports increased by 17% from the previous year level. Over the period under review, global semi-chemical wood pulp imports attained its maximum volume of 3.5M tonnes in 2015, falling back in the following year.

In value terms, semi-chemical wood pulp imports amounted to $1.5B in 2016. Overall, semi-chemical wood pulp imports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. In that year, global semi-chemical wood pulp imports reached its maximum level of $1.9B. From 2011 to 2016, growth of global semi-chemical wood pulp imports stood at a somewhat lower level.

Semi-Chemical Wood Pulp Imports By Country

China (1.7M tonnes) prevails in semi-chemical wood pulp imports structure, amounting to 1.7M tonnes, which was approx. 50% of total imports in 2016. South Korea (311K tonnes) took a 9% share (based on tonnes) of global semi-chemical wood pulp imports, which put it in second place, following Egypt (9%). India (144K tonnes), the UK (116K tonnes), Italy (108K tonnes), the U.S. (82K tonnes), Poland (68K tonnes), Germany (67K tonnes), Viet Nam (62K tonnes), the Netherlands (62K tonnes), and France (58K tonnes) followed a long way behind this figure.

Imports into China increased at an average annual rate of +6.5% from 2007 to 2016. At the same time, the UK (+32.8%), Egypt (+31.3%), Viet Nam (+22.0%), Poland (+15.6%), India (+14.3%), Italy (+8.9%), the Netherlands (+7.2%), and South Korea (+2.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, the UK emerged as the fastest growing importer/exporter in the world, with a CAGR of +32.8% from 2007-2016. By contrast, France (-3.6%), the U.S. (-7.4%), and Germany (-7.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of the U.S. (2%), and Germany (2%) increased significantly, the share of Viet Nam (-1.5%), Italy (-1.7%), South Korea (-1.8%), India (-2.9%), the UK (-3.1%), Egypt (-8.1%), and China (-21.7%) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, China ($699M) constitutes the largest market for imported semi-chemical wood pulp worldwide, making up 46% of global imports. The second position in the ranking was occupied by Egypt ($156M), with the share of 10% of global imports. It was followed by South Korea, with the share of 9%.

In China, semi-chemical wood pulp imports stood at an average annual rate of +3.2% over the period from 2007-2016. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Egypt (+2.1% per year) and South Korea (+0.2% per year).

Semi-Chemical Wood Pulp Import Prices By Country

The average semi-chemical wood pulp import price stood at $444 per tonne in 2016, declining by -10.1% against the previous year. Overall, semi-chemical wood pulp import price continues to indicate a noticeable shrinkage. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2010, when import increased by 31% y-o-y. Global semi-chemical wood pulp import peaked of $691 per tonne in 2008- however, from 2009 to 2016, it failed to regain its strength.

Import prices varied noticeably by country of destination. the country with the highest import prices was the UK ($543 per tonne), while the U.S. ($359 per tonne) was among the lowest.

From 2007 to 2016, the most notable growth rate of semi-chemical wood pulp import prices was attained by Germany (-1.4% per year), while the other global leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
