Which Country Exports the Most Semi-Chemical Wood Pulp in the World?

In 2016, the global exports of semi-chemical wood pulp amounted to 3.3M tonnes, approximately mirroring the previous year figure. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.5% over the period from 2007 to 2016; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2010, when exports increased by 29% from the previous year level. In that year, global semi-chemical wood pulp exports attained its maximum volume of 3.5M tonnes. From 2011 to 2016, growth of global semi-chemical wood pulp exports stood at a somewhat lower level.

In value terms, semi-chemical wood pulp exports stood at $1.4B in 2016. In general, semi-chemical wood pulp exports continue to indicate a slight contraction. In that year, global semi-chemical wood pulp exports reached its maximum level of $2.1B. From 2011 to 2016, growth of global semi-chemical wood pulp exports failed to regain its strength.

Semi-Chemical Wood Pulp Exports By Country

Canada (2M tonnes) dominates in semi-chemical wood pulp exports structure, recording 2M tonnes, which was approx. 61% of total exports in 2016. Sweden (300K tonnes) held a 9% share (based on tonnes) of global semi-chemical wood pulp exports, which put it in second place, following Finland (8%), New Zealand (6%), and Russia (5%). Estonia (140K tonnes), and the Netherlands (69K tonnes) followed a long way behind this figure.

Canada experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. At the same time, the Netherlands (+168.4%), Estonia (+17.5%), Finland (+8.4%), New Zealand (+2.4%), and Sweden (+1.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, the Netherlands emerged as the fastest growing importer/exporter in the world, with a CAGR of +168.4% from 2007-2016. Russia experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. The Netherlands (-2.1%), Estonia (-3.2%), Finland (-4.2%), and Canada (-4.3%) significantly weakened its position in terms of the global exports, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Canada ($859M) remains the largest semi-chemical wood pulp supplier in the world, making up 61% of global exports. The second position in the ranking was occupied by Sweden ($140M), with the share of 10% of global exports. It was followed by Finland, with the share of 8%.

In Canada, semi-chemical wood pulp exports contracted by an average annual rate of -2.2% over the period from 2007-2016. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates: Sweden (+1.0% per year) and Finland (+3.7% per year).

Semi-Chemical Wood Pulp Export Prices By Country

In 2016, the average export price for semi-chemical wood pulp amounted to $425 per tonne, lowering by -4.7% against the previous year. In general, semi-chemical wood pulp export price continues to indicate a measured slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2010, when it surged by 25% year-to-year. In that year, average semi-chemical wood pulp export price reached its maximum level of $606 per tonne. From 2011 to 2016, growth of average semi-chemical wood pulp export price stood at a somewhat lower level.

Average export prices varied somewhat amongst major exporting countries. In 2016, major exporting countries recorded the following export prices: in Sweden ($466 per tonne) and Estonia ($458 per tonne), while New Zealand ($360 per tonne) and Russia ($363 per tonne) were among the lowest.

From 2007 to 2016, the most notable growth rate of semi-chemical wood pulp export prices was attained by Sweden (-0.3% per year), while the other global leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.
