Which Country Exports the Most Public-Transport Type Passenger Motor Vehicles in the World?

In 2016, approx. 1.6M tonnes of motor vehicle were exported worldwide; falling by -2.1% against the previous year figure. In general, motor vehicle exports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2008, when it surged by 15% against the previous year level. In that year, global motor vehicle exports reached its maximum volume of 1.8M tonnes. From 2009 to 2016, growth of global motor vehicle exports failed to regain its strength.

In value terms, motor vehicle exports stood at $15B in 2016. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +1.5% over the period from 2007 to 2016; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations over the period under review. Over the period under review, global motor vehicle exports attained its maximum level of $17B in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2016, it stood at a somewhat lower level.

Motor Vehicle Exports By Country

Japan (277K tonnes), China (216K tonnes), South Korea (147K tonnes), Turkey (136K tonnes), Germany (109K tonnes), the U.S. (75K tonnes), Poland (59K tonnes), Canada (56K tonnes), Belgium (55K tonnes), Czech Republic (51K tonnes), United Arab Emirates (45K tonnes), and the Netherlands (36K tonnes) represented roughly 79% of total exports of motor vehicle in 2016.

From 2007 to 2016, the most notable growth rate of motor vehicle exports, among the main exporting countries, was attained by China (+6.3% per year), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Japan ($2.6B), China ($2.2B) and Turkey ($1.5B) appeared as the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2016, with a combined 41% share of global exports.

China (+10.3% per year) experienced the highest growth rate of motor vehicle exports, among the main exporting countries, over the last 9 year period, while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Motor Vehicle Export Prices By Country

In 2016, the average export price for motor vehicle amounted to $9,549 per tonne, export ,therefore, remained relatively stable against the previous year level. Over the last nine years it increased at an average annual rate of +1.2%.The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2010, an increase of 16% y-o-y. Global motor vehicle export peaked of $10 per kg in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2016, it stood at a somewhat lower level.

There were significant differences in the average export prices amongst major exporting countries. In 2016, the country with the highest export prices was Poland ($15 per kg), while South Korea ($5,259 per tonne) was among the lowest.

From 2007 to 2016, the most notable growth rate of motor vehicle export prices was attained by United Arab Emirates (+5.2% per year), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
