Which Country Exports the Most Printed Or Illustrated Postcards in the World?

In 2016, the amount of postcard exported worldwide totaled 233K tonnes, declining by -4.7% against the previous year level. Overall, postcard exports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014, when export increased by 25% year-to-year. Over the period under review, global postcard exports attained its maximum volume of 252K tonnes in 2007; however, from 2008 to 2016, it stood at a somewhat lower level.

In value terms, postcard exports stood at $1.3B in 2016. In general, postcard exports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, global postcard exports attained its maximum level of $1.4B in 2008; however, from 2009 to 2016, it failed to regain its strength.

Postcard Exports By Country

China (125K tonnes) represented the major exporting country with an export of around 125K tonnes, which resulted at 54% of total exports. The Netherlands (52K tonnes) took the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by the U.S. (15K tonnes). All these countries together occupied near 29% share of total exports. The following exporters - the UK (9K tonnes), China, Hong Kong SAR (7.3K tonnes), and Mexico (4.9K tonnes) together made up 9% of total exports.

Exports from China decreased at an average annual rate of -1.8% from 2007 to 2016. At the same time, the Netherlands (+48.2%), and the UK (+3.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, the Netherlands emerged as the fastest growing importer/exporter in the world, with a CAGR of +48.2% from 2007-2016. The U.S. experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Mexico (-6.6%), and China, Hong Kong SAR (-16.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2007 to 2016, the share of China, Hong Kong SAR, China, and Mexico increased by 13%, 9%, and 2% percentage points, while the Netherlands (-21.6%) saw their share reduced. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, China ($595M) remains the largest postcard supplier in the world, making up 47% of global exports. The second position in the ranking was occupied by the Netherlands ($187M), with the share of 15% of global exports. It was followed by the U.S., with the share of 11%.

From 2007 to 2016, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value of postcard exports in China expanded at +7.2%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: the Netherlands (+19.4% per year) and the U.S. (-2.7% per year).

Postcard Export Prices By Country

The average postcard export price stood at $5,459 per tonne in 2016, dropping by -2.4% against the previous year. In general, postcard export price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2008, when export increased by 14% y-o-y. Global postcard export peaked of $6,776 per tonne in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2016, it failed to regain its strength.

There were significant differences in the average export prices amongst major exporting countries. In 2016, the country with the highest export prices was the U.S. ($9,432 per tonne), while Mexico ($3,067 per tonne) was among the lowest.

From 2007 to 2016, the most notable growth rate of postcard export prices was attained by China (+9.1% per year), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
