Global prefab housing exports amounted to 3.5M tonnes in 2016, jumping by 9% against the previous year figure. Overall, prefab housing exports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2011, an increase of 12% year-to-year. Over the period under review, global prefab housing exports attained its maximum volume in 2016, and are likely to see steady growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, prefab housing exports stood at $8.4B in 2016. In general, prefab housing exports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. Global prefab housing export peaked of $9.7B in 2008; however, from 2009 to 2016, it failed to regain its strength.

Prefab Housing Exports By Country

China (815K tonnes) was the major exporting country with an export of about 815K tonnes, which reached 23% of total exports. The U.S. (215K tonnes) ranks second globally in prefab housing exports with a 6% share, following Czech Republic (6%), Estonia (6%), and Germany (5%). The Netherlands (136K tonnes), Portugal (110K tonnes), Poland (108K tonnes), Lithuania (105K tonnes), Italy (89K tonnes), Belgium (87K tonnes), and Turkey (79K tonnes) followed a long way behind this figure.

Exports from China increased at an average annual rate of +5.0% from 2007 to 2016. At the same time, Portugal (+24.7%), Estonia (+7.8%), Lithuania (+4.3%), Italy (+1.6%), Poland (+1.2%), and Czech Republic (+1.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Portugal emerged as the fastest growing importer/exporter in the world, with a CAGR of +24.7% from 2007-2016. The Netherlands, and the U.S. experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Turkey (-2.4%), Germany (-2.8%), and Belgium (-6.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Belgium (2%) increased significantly, the share of Portugal (-2.7%), Estonia (-2.8%), and China (-8.3%) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, China ($1.4B) remains the largest prefab housing supplier in the world, making up 17% of global exports. The second position in the ranking was occupied by the U.S. ($573M), with the share of 7% of global exports. It was followed by the Netherlands, with the share of 7%.

From 2007 to 2016, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value of prefab housing exports in China expanded at +3.0%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates: the U.S. (+0.1% per year) and the Netherlands (+4.3% per year).

Prefab Housing Export Prices By Country

The average prefab housing export price stood at $2,414 per tonne in 2016, lowering by -7.6% against the previous year. Overall, prefab housing export price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2008, when export price increased by 12% year-to-year. Global prefab housing export peaked of $2,882 per tonne in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2016, it stood at a somewhat lower level.

There were significant differences in the average export prices amongst major exporting countries. In 2016, the country with the highest export prices was Italy ($4,456 per tonne), while Portugal ($390 per tonne) was among the lowest.

From 2007 to 2016, the most notable growth rate of prefab housing export prices was attained by Poland (+4.2% per year), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
