Which Country Exports the Most Poppy Seeds in the World?

Global poppy seed exports amounted to 84 thousand tonnes in 2015, falling by -1.5% against the previous year level. Overall, the global poppy seed exports indicated a pronounced decline from 2007 to 2015. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticable fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The total export volume decreased at an average annual rate of -1.5% over the last eight years.

The growth pace was the most rapid in 2010, when the output figure increased by +27% from the previous year level. Over the period under review, the global poppy seed exports attained its maximum volume of 98 thousand tonnes in 2013. From 2014 to 2015, the total poppy seed exports growth failed to regain its strength.

In value terms, global exports amounted to $172 million in 2015. Overall, the value of global exports decreased substantially from 2007 to 2015, curtailing at an average annual rate of -3.6%. This trend pattern, however, indicated relatively mild fluctuations throughout the analyzed period.

Poppy Seed Imports By Country

The country with the largest volume of the poppy seed exports in absolute volumes was the Czech Republic (27 thousand tonnes), accounting for 32% of global exports. It was followed by Turkey (12 thousand tonnes), with a share of 15% of global exports. Moreover, poppy seed exports in the Czech Republic exceeded the figures recorded by the world's second largest exporter, Turkey, twofold. The third position in this ranking was occupied by Spain with a share of 9%.

From 2007 to 2015, an average annual growth rate of poppy seed exports in the Czech Republic stood at -1.6%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual growth rates: Turkey (-2.6% per year) and Spain (+4.2% per year).

In value terms, the Czech Republic (54 million USD), Turkey (38 million USD) and the Netherlands (16 million USD) were the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2015, together accounting for 63% of total exports.

China (+34.6% per year) had the highest growth rates of poppy seed exports among the main exporting countries over the last eight years, while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
