Which Country Exports the Most Polycarboxylic Acids in the World?

In 2016, the amount of polycarboxylic acid exported worldwide totaled 9M tonnes, descending by -3.6% against the previous year figure. Overall, polycarboxylic acid exports continue to indicate a perceptible curtailment. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2011, when export increased by 9% from the previous year level. Global polycarboxylic acid export peaked of 13M tonnes in 2007; however, from 2008 to 2016, it failed to regain its strength.

In value terms, polycarboxylic acid exports stood at $8.8B in 2016. In general, polycarboxylic acid exports continue to indicate a abrupt decline. In that year, global polycarboxylic acid exports reached its maximum level of $18B. From 2012 to 2016, growth of global polycarboxylic acid exports failed to regain its strength.

Polycarboxylic Acid Exports By Country

South Korea (2.9M tonnes) was the main exporter of polycarboxylic acid in the world, resulting at 2.9M tonnes, which was approx. 32% of total exports in 2016. China (1.4M tonnes) took a 15% share (based on tonnes) of global polycarboxylic acid exports, which put it in second place, following Thailand (11%), Mexico (7%), the Netherlands (5%), the U.S. (5%), and Poland (5%).

Exports from South Korea decreased at an average annual rate of -2.6% from 2007 to 2016. At the same time, Poland (+26.6%), China (+16.9%), and Mexico (+1.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Poland emerged as the fastest growing importer/exporter in the world, with a CAGR of +26.6% from 2007-2016. By contrast, the Netherlands (-3.8%), Thailand (-5.0%), and the U.S. (-5.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of South Korea (9%), Thailand (6%), the U.S. (3%), and the Netherlands (2%) increased significantly, the share of Poland (-4.4%), and China (-11.5%) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the largest polycarboxylic acid markets worldwide were South Korea ($2.2B), China ($1.5B) and the U.S. ($698M), together accounting for 51% of global exports.Thailand, the Netherlands, Mexico and Poland lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 22%.

Poland (+14.9% per year) experienced the highest growth rate of polycarboxylic acid exports, among the main exporting countries, over the last 9 year period, while the other global leaders experienced mixed trends in the exports figures.

Polycarboxylic Acid Export Prices By Country

The average polycarboxylic acid export price stood at $974 per tonne in 2016, descending by -4.8% against the previous year. In general, polycarboxylic acid export price continues to indicate a moderate descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2011, when it surged by 25% year-to-year. In that year, average polycarboxylic acid export price attained its maximum level of $1,535 per tonne. From 2012 to 2016, growth of average polycarboxylic acid export price failed to regain its strength.

There were significant differences in the average export prices amongst major exporting countries. In 2016, the country with the highest export prices was the U.S. ($1,531 per tonne), while Thailand ($609 per tonne) was among the lowest.

From 2007 to 2016, the most notable growth rate of polycarboxylic acid export prices was attained by the U.S. (+0.8% per year), while the other global leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.
