Which Country Exports the Most Plastic Office Or School Supplies in the World?

In 2016, the amount of office supply exported worldwide totaled 9M tonnes, surging by 3% against the previous year figure. In general, office supply exports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2010, when export increased by 63% against the previous year level. In that year, global office supply exports reached its maximum volume of 11M tonnes. From 2011 to 2016, growth of global office supply exports stood at a somewhat lower level.

In value terms, office supply exports stood at $65B in 2016. Overall, it indicated a prominent increase from 2007 to 2016: the total exports value increased at an average annual rate of +0.8% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. Based on the result of 2016, office supply exports decreased by -4.9% against its level of 2014. Over the period under review, global office supply exports reached its maximum level of $69B in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2016, it failed to regain its strength.

Office Supply Exports By Country

In 2016, China (3.5M tonnes) represented the main exporter for office supply, achieving 39% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Germany (690K tonnes), and the U.S. (657K tonnes), together comprising 15% share of total office supply exports. Italy (395K tonnes), Mexico (320K tonnes), France (265K tonnes), Poland (253K tonnes), India (236K tonnes), the Netherlands (203K tonnes), Czech Republic (182K tonnes), Spain (145K tonnes), and the UK (140K tonnes) occupied the minor share of total exports.

China experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. At the same time, India (+9.5%), Poland (+7.4%), Mexico (+5.3%), the Netherlands (+3.9%), Czech Republic (+2.4%), and Germany (+2.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, India emerged as the fastest growing importer/exporter in the world, with a CAGR of +9.5% from 2007-2016. Spain, the U.S., Italy, and France experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, the UK (-1.8%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. The shares of the largest exporters remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, China ($17B) remains the largest office supply supplier in the world, making up 26% of global exports. The second position in the ranking was occupied by Germany ($8.2B), with the share of 13% of global exports. It was followed by the U.S., with the share of 10%.

From 2007 to 2016, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value of office supply exports in China stood at +9.5%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Germany (+3.0% per year) and the U.S. (+3.9% per year).

Office Supply Export Prices By Country

The average office supply export price stood at $7,256 per tonne in 2016, lowering by -1.8% against the previous year. Overall, it indicated a significant expansion from 2007 to 2016: the export price value increased at an average annual rate of +3.8% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. Based on the result of 2016, office supply export price decreased by -6.7% against its level of 2014. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2011, when export price increased by 57% year-to-year. Global office supply export peaked of $7,781 per tonne in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2016, it failed to regain its strength.

Export prices varied noticeably by country of destination. the country with the highest export prices was Germany ($12 per kg), while India ($2,782 per tonne) was among the lowest.

From 2007 to 2016, the most notable growth rate of office supply export prices was attained by China (+9.9% per year), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
