Which Country Exports the Most Perfumes and Toilet Waters in the World?

In 2016, approx. 628K tonnes of perfume were exported worldwide; picking up by 3% against the previous year figure. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.5% over the period from 2007 to 2016; the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2010, an increase of 13% against the previous year level. Global perfume export peaked of 630K tonnes in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2016, it failed to regain its strength.

In value terms, perfume exports totaled $17B in 2016. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +2.5% over the period from 2007 to 2016; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations over the period under review. Over the period under review, global perfume exports attained its maximum level of $19B in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2016, it failed to regain its strength.

Perfume Exports By Country

In 2016, France (130K tonnes), distantly followed by United Arab Emirates (77K tonnes), Spain (58K tonnes), the U.S. (48K tonnes), Italy (35K tonnes), Germany (35K tonnes), and Poland (33K tonnes) represented the key exporters of perfume, together creating 66% of total exports. The following exporters - China (26K tonnes), Singapore (23K tonnes), the UK (23K tonnes), the Netherlands (15K tonnes), and India (15K tonnes) together made up 16% of total exports.

From 2007 to 2016, the most notable growth rate of perfume exports, among the main exporting countries, was attained by China (+13.2% per year), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, France ($4.2B) remains the largest perfume supplier in the world, making up 25% of global exports. The second position in the ranking was occupied by Germany ($1.8B), with the share of 11% of global exports. It was followed by the U.S., with the share of 10%.

From 2007 to 2016, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value of perfume exports in France contracted by -1.3%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates: Germany (+1.2% per year) and the U.S. (+3.7% per year).

Perfume Export Prices By Country

The average perfume export price stood at $27 per kg in 2016, approximately mirroring the previous year level. In general, perfume export price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2008, an increase of 7% year-to-year. Global perfume export peaked of $30 per kg in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2016, it stood at a somewhat lower level.

There were significant differences in the average export prices amongst major exporting countries. In 2016, the country with the highest export prices was Germany ($53 per kg), while China ($4,953 per tonne) was among the lowest.

From 2007 to 2016, the most notable growth rate of perfume export prices was attained by the UK (+6.6% per year), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
