Global paper bag exports totaled 11M tonnes in 2016, growing by 5% against the previous year level. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.0% over the period from 2007 to 2016; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2010, when exports increased by 13% against the previous year level. Global paper bag export peaked in 2016, and are likely to see steady growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, paper bag exports amounted to $22B in 2016. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +2.8% from 2007 to 2016; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. Global paper bag export peaked of $23B in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2016, it failed to regain its strength.

Paper Bag Exports By Country

The countries with the highest levels of paper bag exports in 2016 were Germany (1.4M tonnes), China (1.2M tonnes), the U.S. (946K tonnes), the Netherlands (798K tonnes), Mexico (610K tonnes), Italy (585K tonnes), Poland (468K tonnes), Belgium (422K tonnes), Canada (373K tonnes), Austria (367K tonnes), Spain (343K tonnes), and France (250K tonnes), together reaching 70% of total export.

From 2007 to 2016, the most notable growth rate of paper bag exports, among the main exporting countries, was attained by Mexico (+19.1% per year), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, China ($3.7B), Germany ($2.9B) and the U.S. ($1.9B) were the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2016, with a combined 40% share of global exports.

China (+12.9% per year) recorded the highest growth rate of paper bag exports, among the main exporting countries, over the last 9 years, while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Paper Bag Export Prices By Country

In 2016, the average export price for paper bag amounted to $1,919 per tonne, declining by -6.9% against the previous year. Overall, paper bag export price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2011, when it surged by 13% year-to-year. Global paper bag export peaked of $2,258 per tonne in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2016, it failed to regain its strength.

There were significant differences in the average export prices amongst major exporting countries. In 2016, the country with the highest export prices was China ($3,036 per tonne), while Mexico ($606 per tonne) was among the lowest.

From 2007 to 2016, the most notable growth rate of paper bag export prices was attained by China (+8.9% per year), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
