Which Country Exports the Most Packing Cases and Boxes in the World?

In 2016, the global exports of packaging stood at 7.2M tonnes, picking up by 5% against the previous year figure. Overall, it indicated a pronounced increase from 2007 to 2016: the total exports volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.4% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. Based on the result of 2016, packaging exports increased by +70.6% against its level of 2009. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2011, when export increased by 17% against the previous year level. Over the period under review, global packaging exports attained its maximum volume in 2016, and are likely to see steady growth in the near future.

In value terms, packaging exports amounted to $3.1B in 2016. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +1.1% from 2007 to 2016; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. Global packaging export peaked of $3.4B in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2016, it failed to regain its strength.

Packaging Exports By Country

In 2016, Poland (1.1M tonnes), followed by Germany (675K tonnes), the Netherlands (505K tonnes), Czech Republic (482K tonnes), and Belgium (396K tonnes) represented the major exporters of packaging, together achieving 44% of total exports. The following exporters - Lithuania (305K tonnes), Latvia (294K tonnes), the U.S. (290K tonnes), Ukraine (197K tonnes), Canada (191K tonnes), France (189K tonnes), and Malaysia (178K tonnes) together made up 23% of total exports.

From 2007 to 2016, the most notable growth rate of packaging exports, among the main exporting countries, was attained by Ukraine (+14.7% per year), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Poland ($389M), Germany ($301M) and Czech Republic ($206M) appeared as the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2016, together accounting for 29% of global exports. These countries were followed by the Netherlands, Belgium, the U.S., France, Canada, Lithuania, Latvia, Malaysia and Ukraine, which together accounted for a further 33%.

Malaysia (+8.1% per year) experienced the highest rates of growth with regard to the packaging exports, among the main exporting countries, over the last 9 years, while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Packaging Export Prices By Country

The average packaging export price stood at $434 per tonne in 2016, reducing by -3.6% against the previous year. Overall, packaging export price continues to indicate a measured reduction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2008, when it surged by 10% y-o-y. In that year, average packaging export price attained its maximum level of $586 per tonne. From 2009 to 2016, growth of average packaging export price failed to regain its strength.

Export prices varied noticeably by country of destination. the country with the highest export prices was France ($584 per tonne), while Ukraine ($142 per tonne) was among the lowest.

From 2007 to 2016, the most notable growth rate of packaging export prices was attained by Czech Republic (+0.0% per year), while the other global leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.
