In 2016, approx. 18M tonnes of surfactant were exported worldwide; moving up by 4% against the previous year level. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.0% from 2007 to 2016; the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations being observed throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2010, when it surged by 9% year-to-year. Global surfactant export peaked in 2016, and are likely to see steady growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, surfactant exports stood at $27B in 2016. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +3.3% over the period from 2007 to 2016; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. Global surfactant export peaked of $30B in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2016, it stood at a somewhat lower level.

Surfactant Exports By Country

In 2016, Germany (1.9M tonnes), China (1.5M tonnes), the U.S. (1.4M tonnes), Belgium (1.3M tonnes), Italy (962K tonnes), France (907K tonnes), the Netherlands (852K tonnes), the UK (761K tonnes), Poland (741K tonnes), Spain (696K tonnes), Mexico (493K tonnes), and Turkey (404K tonnes) represented the key exporters of surfactant in the world, making up 67% of total export.

From 2007 to 2016, the most notable growth rate of surfactant exports, among the main exporting countries, was attained by China (+13.1% per year), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest surfactant markets worldwide were Germany ($3.6B), the U.S. ($3.3B) and Belgium ($2.1B), with a combined 33% share of global exports. These countries were followed by China, France, the Netherlands, Italy, the UK, Poland, Spain, Mexico and Turkey, which together accounted for a further 36%.

China (+17.5% per year) experienced the highest growth rate of surfactant exports, in terms of the main exporting countries, over the last 9 years, while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Surfactant Export Prices By Country

The average surfactant export price stood at $1,520 per tonne in 2016, coming down by -2.7% against the previous year. Overall, surfactant export price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2008, an increase of 16% from the previous year level. Global surfactant export peaked of $1,816 per tonne in 2011; however, from 2012 to 2016, it stood at a somewhat lower level.

Export prices varied noticeably by country of destination. the country with the highest export prices was the U.S. ($2,356 per tonne), while Turkey ($868 per tonne) was among the lowest.

From 2007 to 2016, the most notable growth rate of surfactant export prices was attained by China (+3.9% per year), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
