In 2016, approx. 41M tonnes of nitrogenous, phosphorus or potassium fertilizer were exported worldwide; waning by -10.2% against the previous year level. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.8% from 2007 to 2016; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations over the period under review. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2010, when export increased by 20% year-to-year. Over the period under review, global nitrogenous, phosphorus or potassium fertilizer exports attained its maximum volume of 46M tonnes in 2015, falling back in the following year.

In value terms, nitrogenous, phosphorus or potassium fertilizer exports stood at $17B in 2016. Overall, it indicated a strong expansion from 2007 to 2016: the total exports value increased at an average annual rate of +3.8% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. Global nitrogenous, phosphorus or potassium fertilizer export peaked of $26B in 2011; however, from 2012 to 2016, it failed to regain its strength.

Nitrogenous Fertilizer Exports By Country

In 2016, China (10M tonnes), and Russia (9.2M tonnes) were the major exporters of nitrogenous, phosphorus or potassium fertilizer in the globe, together comprising 47% of total exports. Morocco (5.5M tonnes) took the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by Belgium (2M tonnes). All these countries together held near 18% share of total exports. Lithuania (1.1M tonnes), the Netherlands (920K tonnes), Belarus (847K tonnes), Israel (773K tonnes), and Australia (685K tonnes) held the minor share of total exports.

From 2007 to 2016, the most notable growth rate of nitrogenous, phosphorus or potassium fertilizer exports, among the main exporting countries, was attained by Belarus (+24.3% per year), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, China ($3.3B), Russia ($2.6B) and Morocco ($1.8B) constituted the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2016, with a combined 45% share of global exports. These countries were followed by Israel, Belgium, the Netherlands, Lithuania, Australia and Belarus, which together accounted for a further 18%.

Belarus (+26.7% per year) experienced the highest rates of growth with regard to the nitrogenous, phosphorus or potassium fertilizer exports, among the main exporting countries, over the last 9 years, while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Nitrogenous Fertilizer Export Prices By Country

In 2016, the average export price for nitrogenous, phosphorus or potassium fertilizer amounted to $418 per tonne, shrinking by -9.3% against the previous year. Overall, it indicated a modest growth from 2007 to 2016: the export price value increased at an average annual rate of +1.7% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. Based on the result of 2016, nitrogenous, phosphorus or potassium fertilizer export price decreased by -26.8% against its level of 2011. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2008, when export price increased by 114% y-o-y. In that year, average nitrogenous, phosphorus or potassium fertilizer export price reached its maximum level of $767 per tonne. From 2009 to 2016, growth of average nitrogenous, phosphorus or potassium fertilizer export price failed to regain its strength.

Export prices varied noticeably by country of destination. the country with the highest export prices was Israel ($1,178 per tonne), while Belarus ($281 per tonne) was among the lowest.
