Which Country Exports the Most Nitrogenous Fertilizers in the World?

IndexBox has just published a new report "World: Nitrogenous Fertilizers (Mineral Or Chemical) - Market Report. Analysis and Forecast to 2025". Here is a summary of the report's key findings.

In 2016, the global nitrogenous fertilizer imports stood at 101M tonnes, moving up by 31% against the previous year level. Overall, it indicated a prominent increase from 2007 to 2016: the total imports volume increased at an average annual rate of +7.0% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. Based on the result of 2016, nitrogenous fertilizer imports increased by +84.8% against its level of 2009. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016, when imports increased by 31% year-to-year. In that year, global nitrogenous fertilizer imports attained its maximum volume, and are likely to continue its growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, nitrogenous fertilizer imports stood at $21B in 2016. In general, nitrogenous fertilizer imports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, global nitrogenous fertilizer imports reached its maximum level of $32B in 2012- however, from 2013 to 2016, it failed to regain its strength.

Nitrogenous Fertilizer Imports By Country

In 2016, Mozambique (22M tonnes), distantly followed by Brazil (7.8M tonnes), India (7.5M tonnes), and France (5.8M tonnes) were the main importers of nitrogenous fertilizer, together constituting 42% of total imports. Germany (3.5M tonnes), Turkey (3.3M tonnes), the UK (2.8M tonnes), Australia (2.8M tonnes), Mexico (2.7M tonnes), Thailand (2.5M tonnes), Viet Nam (1.8M tonnes), and Indonesia (1.7M tonnes) followed a long way behind this figure.

From 2007 to 2016, average annual rates of growth with regard to nitrogenous fertilizer imports into Mozambique stood at nan%. At the same time, France (+16.1%), Indonesia (+13.5%), Australia (+10.0%), Mexico (+5.4%), the UK (+4.8%), Brazil (+4.1%), Germany (+2.5%), India (+2.5%), Viet Nam (+2.3%), Turkey (+2.2%), and Thailand (+2.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, France emerged as the fastest growing importer/exporter in the world, with a CAGR of +16.1% from 2007-2016. While the share of Australia (-1.6%), Brazil (-2.3%), and France (-4.2%) decreased significantly, the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the largest nitrogenous fertilizer markets worldwide were Brazil ($1.6B), India ($1.6B) and France ($1.1B), together comprising 21% of global imports.Turkey, Germany, Mexico, the UK, Australia, Thailand, Viet Nam, Indonesia and Mozambique lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 21%.

Mozambique (+11.8% per year) had the highest growth rate of nitrogenous fertilizer imports, in terms of the main importing countries, over the last 9 years, while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Nitrogenous Fertilizer Import Prices By Country

The average nitrogenous fertilizer import price stood at $206 per tonne in 2016, falling by -38.7% against the previous year. Overall, nitrogenous fertilizer import price continues to indicate a drastic slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2008, when import increased by 57% year-to-year. In that year, average nitrogenous fertilizer import price attained its maximum level of $549 per tonne. From 2009 to 2016, growth of average nitrogenous fertilizer import price stood at a somewhat lower level.

Import prices varied noticeably by country of destination. the country with the highest import prices was Mexico ($230 per tonne), while Mozambique ($1 per tonne) was among the lowest.

From 2007 to 2016, the most notable growth rate of nitrogenous fertilizer import prices was attained by Mozambique (nan% per year), while the other global leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
