Which Country Exports the Most Natural Abrasives in the World?

In 2016, the global exports of abrasive amounted to 2M tonnes, ascending by 9% against the previous year figure. In general, abrasive exports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2012, when exports increased by 24% y-o-y. Global abrasive export peaked of 2.1M tonnes in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2016, it stood at a somewhat lower level.

In value terms, abrasive exports totaled $285M in 2016. Overall, it indicated a strong expansion from 2007 to 2016: the total exports value increased at an average annual rate of +0.8% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. Based on the result of 2016, abrasive exports decreased by -11.5% against its level of 2014. Global abrasive export peaked of $323M in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2016, it stood at a somewhat lower level.

Abrasive Exports By Country

In 2016, Greece (569K tonnes), India (481K tonnes), Australia (343K tonnes), and Turkey (289K tonnes) represented the major exporters of abrasive in the world, committing 82% of total export. The following exporters - Iceland (63K tonnes), Japan (57K tonnes), and China (54K tonnes) held near 9% of total exports, each.

From 2007 to 2016, the most notable growth rate of abrasive exports, among the main exporting countries, was attained by Turkey (+4.7% per year), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, India ($88M), Australia ($75M) and Japan ($20M) constituted the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2016, with a combined 64% share of global exports.

Australia (+10.6% per year) recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the abrasive exports, in terms of the main exporting countries, over the last 9 year period, while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Abrasive Export Prices By Country

In 2016, the average export price for abrasive amounted to $139 per tonne, shrinking by -6.7% against the previous year. Over the period from 2007 to 2016 it increased at an average annual rate of +4.2%.The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2008, when export increased by 20% year-to-year. Over the period under review, average abrasive export price reached its maximum level of $155 per tonne in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2016, it stood at a somewhat lower level.

Export prices varied noticeably by country of destination. the country with the highest export prices was Japan ($340 per tonne), while Greece ($12 per tonne) was among the lowest.

From 2007 to 2016, the most notable growth rate of abrasive export prices was attained by China (+8.3% per year), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
