Which Country Exports the Most Mattresses in the World?

In 2016, the amount of mattress exported worldwide stood at 2.5M tonnes, growing by 10% against the previous year figure. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.1% from 2007 to 2016; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2010, when export increased by 27% from the previous year level. Over the period under review, global mattress exports attained its maximum volume in 2016, and are likely to see steady growth in the near future.

In value terms, mattress exports totaled $15B in 2016. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +4.1% over the period from 2007 to 2016; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations in certain years. Over the period under review, global mattress exports reached its maximum level of $16B in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2016, it stood at a somewhat lower level.

Mattress Exports By Country

China (1.3M tonnes) dominates in mattress exports structure, resulting at 1.3M tonnes, which was approx. 51% of total exports in 2016. It was distantly followed by Poland (235K tonnes), achieving 9% share of total mattress exports. The following exporters - India (66K tonnes), the U.S. (62K tonnes), Germany (59K tonnes), Belgium (54K tonnes), Portugal (44K tonnes), the Netherlands (40K tonnes), Mexico (39K tonnes), Italy (39K tonnes), and Estonia (39K tonnes) together made up 17% of total exports.

Exports from China increased at an average annual rate of +4.1% from 2007 to 2016. At the same time, India (+11.5%), Poland (+8.4%), the Netherlands (+7.9%), Portugal (+6.6%), Mexico (+3.7%), Estonia (+3.4%), and the U.S. (+2.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, India emerged as the fastest growing importer/exporter in the world, with a CAGR of +11.5% from 2007-2016. Belgium experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Germany (-2.1%), and Italy (-3.0%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2007 to 2016, the share of India, Poland, and China decreased by -1.6%, -4.8%, and -15.6% percentage points, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, China ($7.7B) remains the largest mattress supplier in the world, making up 51% of global exports. The second position in the ranking was occupied by Poland ($1.1B), with the share of 7% of global exports. It was followed by Germany, with the share of 3%.

From 2007 to 2016, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value of mattress exports in China stood at +5.4%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates: Poland (+6.5% per year) and Germany (-0.7% per year).

Mattress Export Prices By Country

The average mattress export price stood at $5,981 per tonne in 2016, lowering by -8.0% against the previous year. In general, mattress export price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2008, when it surged by 16% from the previous year level. In that year, average mattress export price attained its maximum level of $6,959 per tonne. From 2009 to 2016, growth of average mattress export price failed to regain its strength.

There were significant differences in the average export prices amongst major exporting countries. In 2016, the country with the highest export prices was Germany ($8,720 per tonne), while Portugal ($3,228 per tonne) was among the lowest.

From 2007 to 2016, the most notable growth rate of mattress export prices was attained by Germany (+1.5% per year), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
