Which Country Exports the Most Marble and Travertine in the World?

In 2016, the amount of marble exported worldwide stood at 9.4M tonnes, coming down by -11.4% against the previous year level. Overall, marble exports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2010, an increase of 32% against the previous year level. Over the period under review, global marble exports attained its maximum volume of 16M tonnes in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2016, it failed to regain its strength.

In value terms, marble exports totaled $2B in 2016. Overall, it indicated a moderate growth from 2007 to 2016: the total exports value increased at an average annual rate of +0.5% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. Based on the result of 2016, marble exports decreased by -28.8% against its level of 2013. Global marble export peaked of $2.8B in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2016, it failed to regain its strength.

Marble Exports By Country

Turkey (4.4M tonnes) was the main exporter of marble in the world, recording 4.4M tonnes, which was near 47% of total exports in 2016. Italy (1.2M tonnes) occupied the second position in the ranking, followed by Spain (769K tonnes), Greece (591K tonnes), and Portugal (452K tonnes). All these countries together held near 32% share of total exports. The following exporters - Croatia (241K tonnes), Pakistan (225K tonnes), Germany (175K tonnes), and India (166K tonnes) together made up 9% of total exports.

From 2007 to 2016, average annual rates of growth with regard to marble exports from Turkey stood at +5.6%. At the same time, Pakistan (+21.5%), Greece (+10.4%), Portugal (+4.3%), Germany (+4.3%), and Italy (+2.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Pakistan emerged as the fastest growing importer/exporter in the world, with a CAGR of +21.5% from 2007-2016. By contrast, Spain (-2.4%), India (-3.0%), and Croatia (-14.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2007 to 2016, the share of Croatia, and Spain increased by 8%, and 2% percentage points, while Portugal (-1.5%), Pakistan (-2.0%), Italy (-2.1%), Greece (-3.7%), and Turkey (-18.1%) saw their share reduced. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Turkey ($859M) remains the largest marble supplier in the world, making up 42% of global exports. The second position in the ranking was occupied by Italy ($349M), with the share of 17% of global exports. It was followed by Greece, with the share of 8%.

From 2007 to 2016, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value of marble exports in Turkey stood at +10.9%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates: Italy (+3.2% per year) and Greece (+12.2% per year).

Marble Export Prices By Country

In 2016, the average export price for marble amounted to $217 per tonne, coming up by 6% against the previous year. Over the period from 2007 to 2016 it increased at an average annual rate of +2.4%.The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015, when export increased by 19% y-o-y. Global marble export peaked in 2016, and is likely to see steady growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average export prices amongst major exporting countries. In 2016, the country with the highest export prices was Italy ($295 per tonne), while Croatia ($69 per tonne) was among the lowest.

From 2007 to 2016, the most notable growth rate of marble export prices was attained by Croatia (+11.5% per year), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
