Which Country Exports the Most Lead Ores and Concentrates in the World?

In 2016, the amount of lead ore exported worldwide amounted to 2.9M tonnes, coming down by -11.1% against the previous year level. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.6% from 2007 to 2016; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014, when export increased by 20% year-to-year. In that year, global lead ore exports attained its maximum volume of 3.6M tonnes. From 2015 to 2016, growth of global lead ore exports stood at a somewhat lower level.

In value terms, lead ore exports amounted to $5.3B in 2016. Overall, lead ore exports continue to indicate a prominent growth. Over the period under review, global lead ore exports attained its maximum level of $7.4B in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2016, it failed to regain its strength.

Lead Ore Exports By Country

Peru (566K tonnes), Russia (385K tonnes), the U.S. (356K tonnes), Mexico (238K tonnes), Australia (190K tonnes), Belgium (134K tonnes), Bolivia (120K tonnes), and Turkey (107K tonnes) represented roughly 72% of total exports of lead ore in 2016. The following exporters - Sweden (70K tonnes), Spain (68K tonnes), Poland (60K tonnes), and South Africa (58K tonnes) took approx. 9% of total exports, each.

From 2007 to 2016, the most notable growth rate of lead ore exports, among the main exporting countries, was attained by Spain (+100.5% per year), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Peru ($1.2B), Mexico ($1B) and the U.S. ($766M) appeared as the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2016, with a combined 56% share of global exports. These countries were followed by Russia, Australia, Belgium, Bolivia, Turkey, Sweden, South Africa, Spain and Poland, which together accounted for a further 30%.

Spain (+73.8% per year) recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the lead ore exports, in terms of the main exporting countries, over the last 9 year period, while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Lead Ore Export Prices By Country

The average lead ore export price stood at $1,817 per tonne in 2016, ascending by 5% against the previous year. Overall, it indicated a slight increase from 2007 to 2016: the export price value increased at an average annual rate of +1.9% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. Based on the result of 2016, lead ore export price decreased by -34.5% against its level of 2011. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2011, an increase of 56% y-o-y. In that year, average lead ore export price attained its maximum level of $2,772 per tonne. From 2012 to 2016, growth of average lead ore export price stood at a somewhat lower level.

There were significant differences in the average export prices amongst major exporting countries. In 2016, the country with the highest export prices was Mexico ($4,338 per tonne), while Poland ($343 per tonne) was among the lowest.

From 2007 to 2016, the most notable growth rate of lead ore export prices was attained by Mexico (+18.9% per year), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
