Which Country Exports the Most Labels Of Paper Or Paperboard in the World?

In 2016, approx. 581K tonnes of paper label were exported worldwide; going up by 2% against the previous year figure. Overall, paper label exports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2010, when export increased by 12% against the previous year level. Global paper label export peaked in 2016, and are likely to see steady growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, paper label exports totaled $4.7B in 2016. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +1.6% from 2007 to 2016; the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being observed over the period under review. Global paper label export peaked of $5B in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2016, it stood at a somewhat lower level.

Paper Label Exports By Country

In 2016, China (110K tonnes), distantly followed by Germany (51K tonnes), the U.S. (48K tonnes), China, Hong Kong SAR (39K tonnes), and the Netherlands (30K tonnes) represented the main exporters of paper label, together creating 48% of total exports. The following exporters - Mexico (20K tonnes), Slovakia (20K tonnes), France (20K tonnes), Italy (19K tonnes), Spain (18K tonnes), the UK (18K tonnes), and Poland (16K tonnes) held near 22% of total exports, each.

From 2007 to 2016, average annual rates of growth with regard to paper label exports from China stood at -1.6%. At the same time, Slovakia (+22.7%), Poland (+13.2%), Italy (+5.5%), the Netherlands (+5.4%), Spain (+3.8%), Germany (+3.1%), the UK (+1.6%), Mexico (+1.5%), and France (+1.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Slovakia emerged as the fastest growing importer/exporter in the world, with a CAGR of +22.7% from 2007-2016. The U.S. experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, China, Hong Kong SAR (-8.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. China, Hong Kong SAR (8%), and China (3%) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the global exports, while Poland, the Netherlands, Germany, and Slovakia saw its share reduced by -1.8%, -2.0%, -2.1%, and -2.9% from 2007 to 2016, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the largest paper label markets worldwide were China ($634M), China, Hong Kong SAR ($558M) and the U.S. ($530M), together comprising 37% of global exports. These countries were followed by Germany, the Netherlands, the UK, Italy, France, Mexico, Spain, Poland and Slovakia, which together accounted for a further 33%.

Poland (+11.1% per year) experienced the highest growth rate of paper label exports, in terms of the main exporting countries, over the last 9 year period, while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Paper Label Export Prices By Country

The average paper label export price stood at $8,046 per tonne in 2016, reducing by -3.1% against the previous year. Over the period from 2007 to 2016 it increased at an average annual rate of +1.2%.The growth pace was the most rapid in 2008, when export increased by 17% from the previous year level. Global paper label export peaked of $9,037 per tonne in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2016, it failed to regain its strength.

There were significant differences in the average export prices amongst major exporting countries. In 2016, the country with the highest export prices was China, Hong Kong SAR ($14 per kg), while Slovakia ($810 per tonne) was among the lowest.

From 2007 to 2016, the most notable growth rate of paper label export prices was attained by China (+10.2% per year), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
