Which Country Exports the Most Knives and Cutting Blades in the World?

In 2016, approx. 179K tonnes of cutting blade were imported worldwide- increasing by 2% against the previous year figure. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.4% from 2007 to 2016- the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2010, when it surged by 9% from the previous year level. Global cutting blade import peaked in 2016, and are expected to retain its growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, cutting blade imports totaled $3.5B in 2016. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +3.3% from 2007 to 2016- the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. Over the period under review, global cutting blade imports reached its maximum level of $3.6B in 2014- however, from 2015 to 2016, it stood at a somewhat lower level.

Cutting Blade Imports By Country

China (26K tonnes), and Germany (21K tonnes) represented roughly 26% of total imports of cutting blade in 2016. It was distantly followed by Austria (13K tonnes), and France (8.9K tonnes), together generating 12% share of total cutting blade imports. The Netherlands (5.9K tonnes), Russia (5.6K tonnes), Italy (5.5K tonnes), Australia (4.8K tonnes), Spain (4.8K tonnes), Japan (4.1K tonnes), Czech Republic (4.1K tonnes), and the UK (3.9K tonnes) occupied the minor share of total imports.

From 2007 to 2016, the most notable growth rate of cutting blade imports, among the main importing countries, was attained by Australia (+9.4% per year), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, China ($839M) constitutes the largest market for imported cutting blade worldwide, making up 24% of global imports. The second position in the ranking was occupied by Germany ($199M), with the share of 6% of global imports. It was followed by Japan, with the share of 3%.

From 2007 to 2016, the average annual growth rate of value of cutting blade imports in China expanded at +6.9%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates: Germany (+1.2% per year) and Japan (+2.8% per year).

Cutting Blade Import Prices By Country

In 2016, the average import price for cutting blade amounted to $20 per kg, remaining constant against the previous year level. Over the last nine years it increased at an average annual rate of +1.9%.The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2010, an increase of 14% against the previous year level. Global cutting blade import peaked of $20 per kg in 2014- however, from 2015 to 2016, it failed to regain its strength.

There were significant differences in the average import prices amongst major importing countries. In 2016, the country with the highest import prices was China ($32 per kg), while Austria ($5,118 per tonne) was among the lowest.

From 2007 to 2016, the most notable growth rate of cutting blade import prices was attained by Japan (+8.4% per year), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
