Which Country Exports the Most Knives and Cutting Blades in the World?

In 2016, the global cutting blade exports amounted to 111K tonnes, remaining stable against the previous year figure. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.7% over the period from 2007 to 2016; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations in certain years. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2010, an increase of 17% y-o-y. Over the period under review, global cutting blade exports reached its maximum volume of 115K tonnes in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2016, it stood at a somewhat lower level.

In value terms, cutting blade exports stood at $2.5B in 2016. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +1.7% over the period from 2007 to 2016; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations over the period under review. Over the period under review, global cutting blade exports attained its maximum level of $2.7B in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2016, it failed to regain its strength.

Cutting Blade Exports By Country

China (23K tonnes), and Germany (21K tonnes) represented roughly 39% of total exports of cutting blade in 2016. It was distantly followed by Austria (13K tonnes), France (5.9K tonnes), and the Netherlands (5.4K tonnes), together making up 21% share of total cutting blade exports. Czech Republic (3.7K tonnes), Italy (3.7K tonnes), Japan (3.6K tonnes), South Korea (2.3K tonnes), the UK (2.3K tonnes), Spain (2.2K tonnes), and Slovenia (2.1K tonnes) occupied the weak share of total exports.

From 2007 to 2016, the most notable growth rate of cutting blade exports, among the main exporting countries, was attained by Czech Republic (+7.7% per year), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Germany ($539M), China ($321M) and Japan ($203M) appeared as the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2016, with a combined 43% share of global exports. These countries were followed by Austria, Italy, the Netherlands, France, the UK, Czech Republic, South Korea, Slovenia and Spain, which together accounted for a further 25%.

South Korea (+6.8% per year) experienced the highest growth rate of cutting blade exports, among the main exporting countries, over the last 9 year period, while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Cutting Blade Export Prices By Country

In 2016, the average export price for cutting blade amounted to $22 per kg, growing by 2% against the previous year. Overall, cutting blade export price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2008, when export increased by 8% year-to-year. In that year, average cutting blade export price attained its maximum level of $24 per kg. From 2009 to 2016, growth of average cutting blade export price stood at a somewhat lower level.

Export prices varied noticeably by country of destination. the country with the highest export prices was Japan ($56 per kg), while Spain ($8,993 per tonne) was among the lowest.
