In 2016, the global exports of steel pipe and tube stood at 1.6M tonnes, shrinking by -25.5% against the previous year figure. In general, steel pipe and tube exports continue to indicate a mild setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014, when export increased by 23% against the previous year level. Over the period under review, global steel pipe and tube exports reached its maximum volume of 2.1M tonnes in 2015, falling back in the following year.

In value terms, steel pipe and tube exports totaled $1.3B in 2016. In general, steel pipe and tube exports continue to indicate a measured downturn. In that year, global steel pipe and tube exports reached its maximum level of $2.2B. From 2009 to 2016, growth of global steel pipe and tube exports failed to regain its strength.

Steel Pipe And Tube Exports By Country

In 2016, China (639K tonnes) was the largest exporter for steel pipe and tube, generating 40% of total exports. It was distantly followed by United Arab Emirates (202K tonnes), Germany (117K tonnes), India (117K tonnes), and Japan (79K tonnes), together mixed up 32% share of total steel pipe and tube exports. Saudi Arabia (71K tonnes), France (68K tonnes), Spain (54K tonnes), and the U.S. (43K tonnes) followed a long way behind this figure.

Exports from China decreased at an average annual rate of -1.8% from 2007 to 2016. At the same time, United Arab Emirates (+15.0%), Japan (+8.3%), Saudi Arabia (+7.0%), and Spain (+6.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, United Arab Emirates emerged as the fastest growing importer/exporter in the world, with a CAGR of +15.0% from 2007-2016. Germany, and India experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, the U.S. (-3.5%), and France (-15.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. France (15%), and China (7%) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the global exports, while Spain, Saudi Arabia, Japan, and United Arab Emirates saw its share reduced by -1.5%, -2.0%, -2.5%, and -9.0% from 2007 to 2016, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, China ($423M) remains the largest steel pipe and tube supplier in the world, making up 32% of global exports. The second position in the ranking was occupied by Germany ($137M), with the share of 10% of global exports. It was followed by India, with the share of 7%.

From 2007 to 2016, the average annual growth rate of value of steel pipe and tube exports in China decreased by -0.0%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates: Germany (+0.7% per year) and India (+2.3% per year).

Steel Pipe And Tube Export Prices By Country

In 2016, the average export price for steel pipe and tube amounted to $824 per tonne, declining by -11.9% against the previous year. In general, steel pipe and tube export price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2008, when export increased by 21% y-o-y. Over the period under review, average steel pipe and tube export price reached its maximum level of $1,129 per tonne in 2009; however, from 2010 to 2016, it stood at a somewhat lower level.

There were significant differences in the average export prices amongst major exporting countries. In 2016, the country with the highest export prices was Germany ($1,168 per tonne), while United Arab Emirates ($356 per tonne) was among the lowest.

From 2007 to 2016, the most notable growth rate of steel pipe and tube export prices was attained by India (+2.9% per year), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
