Which Country Exports the Most Ice Cream in the World?

In 2016, the amount of ice cream exported worldwide totaled 1.2M tonnes, going up by 3% against the previous year figure. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.7% over the period from 2007 to 2016; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations over the period under review. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2011, when exports increased by 9% year-to-year. Global ice cream export peaked in 2016, and are likely to continue its growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, ice cream exports amounted to $3.3B in 2016. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +3.2% from 2007 to 2016; however, the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations being observed in certain years. Over the period under review, global ice cream exports attained its maximum level of $3.5B in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2016, it stood at a somewhat lower level.

Ice Cream Exports By Country

The countries with the highest levels of ice cream exports in 2016 were Germany (156K tonnes), France (140K tonnes), and Belgium (138K tonnes), together amounting to 36% of total export. The Netherlands (82K tonnes) ranks second globally in ice cream exports with a 7% share, following Italy (6%), and the U.S. (5%). The UK (53K tonnes), Hungary (44K tonnes), Poland (42K tonnes), Spain (42K tonnes), and Thailand (34K tonnes) followed a long way behind this figure.

From 2007 to 2016, the most notable growth rate of ice cream exports, among the main exporting countries, was attained by the Netherlands (+12.1% per year), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, France ($448M), Germany ($444M) and Belgium ($388M) constituted the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2016, with a combined 38% share of global exports. These countries were followed by Italy, the Netherlands, the U.S., the UK, Spain, Hungary, Poland and Thailand, which together accounted for a further 37%.

The U.S. (+14.1% per year) experienced the highest rates of growth with regard to the ice cream exports, among the main exporting countries, over the last 9 years, while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Ice Cream Export Prices By Country

The average ice cream export price stood at $2,802 per tonne in 2016, leveling off at the previous year level. Overall, ice cream export price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2008, when export increased by 15% year-to-year. In that year, average ice cream export price attained its maximum level of $3,371 per tonne. From 2009 to 2016, growth of average ice cream export price failed to regain its strength.

There were significant differences in the average export prices amongst major exporting countries. In 2016, the country with the highest export prices was Italy ($3,646 per tonne), while Thailand ($1,767 per tonne) was among the lowest.

From 2007 to 2016, the most notable growth rate of ice cream export prices was attained by the U.S. (+3.5% per year), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
