In 2016, approx. 191K tonnes of sewing machine were exported worldwide; remaining relatively unchanged against the previous year figure. In general, sewing machine exports continue to indicate a mild contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2010, when export increased by 34% y-o-y. Over the period under review, global sewing machine exports attained its maximum volume of 212K tonnes in 2011; however, from 2012 to 2016, it stood at a somewhat lower level.

In value terms, sewing machine exports totaled $4.7B in 2016. Overall, sewing machine exports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, global sewing machine exports attained its maximum level of $5B in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2016, it stood at a somewhat lower level.

Sewing Machine Exports By Country

China (96K tonnes) dominates in sewing machine exports structure, accounting for 96K tonnes, which was near 51% of total exports in 2016. Germany (13K tonnes) held a 7% share (based on tonnes) of global sewing machine exports, which put it in second place, following Japan (7%), and Malaysia (5%). The Netherlands (8.1K tonnes), Thailand (7.1K tonnes), China, Hong Kong SAR (6.1K tonnes), Italy (4.3K tonnes), United Arab Emirates (4.3K tonnes), India (3.2K tonnes), and South Korea (2.9K tonnes) followed a long way behind this figure.

Exports from China decreased at an average annual rate of -1.4% from 2007 to 2016. At the same time, the Netherlands (+15.0%), India (+12.9%), Malaysia (+12.4%), and Germany (+6.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, the Netherlands emerged as the fastest growing importer/exporter in the world, with a CAGR of +15.0% from 2007-2016. Italy, and Thailand experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, United Arab Emirates (-2.6%), Japan (-5.6%), China, Hong Kong SAR (-7.5%), and South Korea (-11.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of China (7%), Japan (4%), China, Hong Kong SAR (3%), and South Korea (3%) increased significantly, the share of Germany (-2.9%), the Netherlands (-3.0%), and Malaysia (-3.5%) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, China ($1.6B) remains the largest sewing machine supplier in the world, making up 34% of global exports. The second position in the ranking was occupied by Japan ($490M), with the share of 10% of global exports. It was followed by Germany, with the share of 9%.

In China, sewing machine exports expanded at an average annual rate of +3.6% over the period from 2007-2016. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates: Japan (-4.5% per year) and Germany (-0.1% per year).

Sewing Machine Export Prices By Country

The average sewing machine export price stood at $25 per kg in 2016, descending by -1.6% against the previous year. Over the period from 2007 to 2016 it increased at an average annual rate of +2.0%.The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013, an increase of 10% y-o-y. Over the period under review, average sewing machine export price reached its maximum level of $25 per kg in 2015, falling back in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average export prices amongst major exporting countries. In 2016, the country with the highest export prices was Japan ($39 per kg), while Malaysia ($4,361 per tonne) was among the lowest.

From 2007 to 2016, the most notable growth rate of sewing machine export prices was attained by China (+5.0% per year), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
