Which Country Exports the Most Hats and Other Headgear in the World?

IndexBox has just published a new report "World: Hats And Other Headgear - Market Report. Analysis and Forecast to 2025". Here is a summary of the report's key findings.

In 2016, the amount of hat imported worldwide amounted to 35K tonnes, going down by -2.7% against the previous year figure. Overall, it indicated a strong expansion from 2007 to 2016: the total imports volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.3% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. Based on the result of 2016, hat imports increased by +53.4% against its level of 2008. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2010, when imports increased by 13% y-o-y. Over the period under review, global hat imports attained its maximum volume of 36K tonnes in 2015, falling back in the following year.

In value terms, hat imports stood at $409M in 2016. Overall, hat imports continue to indicate a strong increase. Global hat import peaked in 2016, and are expected to retain its growth in the near future.

Hat Imports By Country

China (6.5K tonnes), and the U.S. (6K tonnes) represented roughly 36% of total imports of hat in 2016. It was distantly followed by Japan (1.6K tonnes), committing 5% share of total hat imports. The UK (1.5K tonnes), United Arab Emirates (1.4K tonnes), Thailand (1.2K tonnes), Brazil (1.1K tonnes), South Africa (964 tonnes), Spain (954 tonnes), France (830 tonnes), Germany (805 tonnes), and Australia (684 tonnes) followed a long way behind this figure.

From 2007 to 2016, the most notable growth rate of hat imports, among the main importing countries, was attained by Brazil (+28.6% per year), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the U.S. ($119M) constitutes the largest market for imported hat worldwide, making up 29% of global imports. The second position in the ranking was occupied by Japan ($52M), with the share of 13% of global imports. It was followed by the UK, with the share of 6%.

In the U.S., hat imports stood at an average annual rate of +7.0% over the period from 2007-2016. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates: Japan (+14.5% per year) and the UK (+4.5% per year).

Hat Import Prices By Country

In 2016, the average import price for hat amounted to $12 per kg, coming up by 8% against the previous year. Overall, it indicated a strong growth from 2007 to 2016: the import price value increased at an average annual rate of +5.2% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. Based on the result of 2016, hat import price increased by +12.9% against its level of 2014. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2011, when import price increased by 21% y-o-y. Over the period under review, average hat import price attained its maximum level in 2016, and is likely to continue its growth in the near future.

There were significant differences in the average import prices amongst major importing countries. In 2016, the country with the highest import prices was Japan ($33 per kg), while China ($258 per tonne) was among the lowest.

From 2007 to 2016, the most notable growth rate of hat import prices was attained by China (+45.2% per year), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
