Which Country Exports the Most Hats and Other Headgear in the World?

In 2016, approx. 12K tonnes of hat were exported worldwide; coming up by 17% against the previous year level. In general, hat exports continue to indicate a remarkable expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014, when it surged by 23% from the previous year level. Global hat export peaked in 2016, and are expected to retain its growth in the immediate term.

Hat Exports By Country

China (6.5K tonnes) prevails in hat exports structure, recording 6.5K tonnes, which was approx. 53% of total exports in 2016. It was distantly followed by the UK (763 tonnes), generating 6% share of total hat exports. The U.S. (453 tonnes), Mexico (417 tonnes), Viet Nam (416 tonnes), Spain (372 tonnes), Cambodia (336 tonnes), Italy (284 tonnes), the Dominican Republic (236 tonnes), Germany (236 tonnes), Thailand (195 tonnes), and China, Hong Kong SAR (194 tonnes) followed a long way behind this figure.

Exports from China increased at an average annual rate of +14.4% from 2007 to 2016. At the same time, the Dominican Republic (+71.0%), Thailand (+28.6%), Spain (+27.5%), Cambodia (+14.9%), Germany (+12.6%), Viet Nam (+8.0%), Italy (+7.4%), the U.S. (+1.7%), and Mexico (+1.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, the Dominican Republic emerged as the fastest growing importer/exporter in the world, with a CAGR of +71.0% from 2007-2016. By contrast, the UK (-6.1%), and China, Hong Kong SAR (-7.0%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of the UK (5%) increased significantly, the share of Viet Nam (-1.7%), the Dominican Republic (-1.9%), Cambodia (-1.9%), Spain (-2.7%), and China (-37.0%) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, China ($293M) remains the largest hat supplier in the world, making up 63% of global exports. The second position in the ranking was occupied by Italy ($22M), with the share of 5% of global exports. It was followed by Viet Nam, with the share of 4%.

In China, hat exports expanded at an average annual rate of +15.3% over the period from 2007-2016. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Italy (+3.0% per year) and Viet Nam (+9.8% per year).

Hat Export Prices By Country

In 2016, the average export price for hat amounted to $37 per kg, shrinking by -10.0% against the previous year. Overall, it indicated a remarkable expansion from 2007 to 2016: the export price value increased at an average annual rate of +4.0% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. Based on the result of 2016, hat export price increased by +5.9% against its level of 2014. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2011, when export increased by 26% y-o-y. In that year, average hat export price reached its maximum level of $45 per kg. From 2012 to 2016, growth of average hat export price failed to regain its strength.

There were significant differences in the average export prices amongst major exporting countries. In 2016, the country with the highest export prices was Italy ($79 per kg), while Cambodia ($2,783 per tonne) was among the lowest.

From 2007 to 2016, the most notable growth rate of hat export prices was attained by the UK (+9.4% per year), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
