In 2016, the amount of stone exported worldwide stood at 17M tonnes, rising by 7% against the previous year figure. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.1% from 2007 to 2016; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations over the period under review. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2011, an increase of 25% year-to-year. Over the period under review, global stone exports reached its maximum volume of 18M tonnes in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2016, it stood at a somewhat lower level.

In value terms, stone exports totaled $1.6B in 2016. Overall, stone exports continue to indicate a moderate setback. Over the period under review, global stone exports attained its maximum level of $2.1B in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2016, it stood at a somewhat lower level.

Stone Exports By Country

In 2016, India (7.3M tonnes) represented the key exporter for stone, generating 42% of total exports. United Arab Emirates (2.5M tonnes) held a 14% share (based on tonnes) of global stone exports, which put it in second place, following China (6%), Brazil (6%), and Norway (6%). The following exporters - the UK (378K tonnes), Sweden (350K tonnes), South Africa (344K tonnes), and Portugal (313K tonnes) occupied approx. 8% of total exports, each.

Exports from India increased at an average annual rate of +6.2% from 2007 to 2016. At the same time, United Arab Emirates (+42.1%), the UK (+36.5%), Norway (+14.8%), Sweden (+4.7%), South Africa (+3.6%), and China (+1.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, United Arab Emirates emerged as the fastest growing importer/exporter in the world, with a CAGR of +42.1% from 2007-2016. By contrast, Brazil (-1.5%), and Portugal (-5.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2007 to 2016, the share of the UK, Norway, United Arab Emirates, and India decreased by -2.0%, -4.0%, -13.8%, and -17.4% percentage points, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, India ($674M) remains the largest stone supplier in the world, making up 43% of global exports. The second position in the ranking was occupied by Brazil ($189M), with the share of 12% of global exports. It was followed by Norway, with the share of 5%.

In India, stone exports expanded at an average annual rate of +0.3% over the period from 2007-2016. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Brazil (-0.3% per year) and Norway (-3.1% per year).

Stone Export Prices By Country

The average stone export price stood at $91 per tonne in 2016, declining by -14.2% against the previous year. Overall, stone export price continues to indicate a perceptible decrease. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013, when export increased by 17% against the previous year level. In that year, average stone export price attained its maximum level of $136 per tonne. From 2014 to 2016, growth of average stone export price failed to regain its strength.

Export prices varied noticeably by country of destination. the country with the highest export prices was Brazil ($184 per tonne), while the UK ($5 per tonne) was among the lowest.

From 2007 to 2016, the most notable growth rate of stone export prices was attained by Brazil (+1.2% per year), while the other global leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.
