Which Country Exports the Most Fluorspar in the World?

Global fluorspar exports stood at 12M tonnes in 2016, ascending by 2% against the previous year figure. Overall, fluorspar exports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2010, an increase of 29% against the previous year level. Global fluorspar export peaked of 12M tonnes in 2007; however, from 2008 to 2016, it stood at a somewhat lower level.

In value terms, fluorspar exports stood at $929M in 2016. Overall, it indicated a mild increase from 2007 to 2016: the total exports value decreased at an average annual rate of -0.1% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. Based on the result of 2016, fluorspar exports decreased by -22.5% against its level of 2014. Over the period under review, global fluorspar exports reached its maximum level of $1.2B in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2016, it stood at a somewhat lower level.

Fluorspar Exports By Country

In 2016, Turkey (5.6M tonnes) was the largest exporter for fluorspar, making up 48% of total exports. China (761K tonnes) held a 7% share (based on tonnes) of global fluorspar exports, which put it in second place, following Thailand (6%), Canada (5%), and Mexico (5%). The following exporters - India (438K tonnes), Italy (357K tonnes), Norway (338K tonnes), Mongolia (249K tonnes), Czech Republic (225K tonnes), and France (205K tonnes) together made up 16% of total exports.

From 2007 to 2016, average annual rates of growth with regard to fluorspar exports from Turkey stood at +2.0%. At the same time, Thailand (+4.5%), Czech Republic (+2.5%), Italy (+1.9%), and Canada (+1.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Thailand emerged as the fastest growing importer/exporter in the world, with a CAGR of +4.5% from 2007-2016. India experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Norway (-1.2%), Mexico (-2.2%), France (-3.2%), Mongolia (-4.0%), and China (-7.7%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. China (7%) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the global exports, while Thailand, and Turkey saw its share reduced by -2.1%, and -7.9% from 2007 to 2016, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the largest fluorspar markets worldwide were Turkey ($157M), Mexico ($117M) and China ($111M), with a combined 41% share of global exports.Canada, Mongolia, Norway, India, Thailand, Italy, France and Czech Republic lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 32%.

Thailand (+9.2% per year) had the highest growth rate of fluorspar exports, in terms of the main exporting countries, over the last 9 year period, while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Fluorspar Export Prices By Country

In 2016, the average export price for fluorspar amounted to $80 per tonne, shrinking by -10.1% against the previous year. Over the last nine years it increased at an average annual rate of +1.5%.The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2008, when export increased by 31% y-o-y. Over the period under review, average fluorspar export price reached its maximum level of $109 per tonne in 2011; however, from 2012 to 2016, it failed to regain its strength.

Export prices varied noticeably by country of destination. the country with the highest export prices was Mongolia ($237 per tonne), while Turkey ($28 per tonne) was among the lowest.

From 2007 to 2016, the most notable growth rate of fluorspar export prices was attained by China (+7.6% per year), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
