Which Country Exports the Most Flax Woven Fabrics in the World?

In 2016, approx. 53K tonnes of flax fabric were exported worldwide; surging by 20% against the previous year figure. Overall, flax fabric exports continue to indicate a moderate setback. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2010, when export increased by 82% year-to-year. In that year, global flax fabric exports reached its maximum volume of 74K tonnes. From 2011 to 2016, growth of global flax fabric exports stood at a somewhat lower level.

In value terms, flax fabric exports totaled $1.1B in 2016. In general, flax fabric exports continue to indicate a perceptible slump. Global flax fabric export peaked of $1.5B in 2007; however, from 2008 to 2016, it stood at a somewhat lower level.

Flax Fabric Exports By Country

China (25K tonnes) was the major exporter of flax fabric in the world, reaching 25K tonnes, which was near 47% of total exports in 2016. It was distantly followed by Belgium (3.8K tonnes), Italy (3.7K tonnes), and Belarus (3.3K tonnes), together making up 21% share of total flax fabric exports. India (2.1K tonnes), China, Hong Kong SAR (1.8K tonnes), Russia (1.7K tonnes), the Netherlands (1.6K tonnes), Spain (1.3K tonnes), the UK (1.2K tonnes), and Turkey (963 tonnes) followed a long way behind this figure.

Exports from China increased at an average annual rate of +5.8% from 2007 to 2016. At the same time, India (+19.1%), and the Netherlands (+2.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, India emerged as the fastest growing importer/exporter in the world, with a CAGR of +19.1% from 2007-2016. Belgium experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Belarus (-1.1%), Italy (-1.7%), Turkey (-5.0%), Russia (-5.3%), Spain (-7.0%), the UK (-11.0%), and China, Hong Kong SAR (-21.8%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2007 to 2016, the share of China, Hong Kong SAR, the UK, Spain, and Russia increased by 28%, 4%, 2%, and 2% percentage points, while India (-3.1%), and China (-18.4%) saw their share reduced. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, China ($479M) remains the largest flax fabric supplier in the world, making up 43% of global exports. The second position in the ranking was occupied by Italy ($156M), with the share of 14% of global exports. It was followed by Belgium, with the share of 6%.

In China, flax fabric exports expanded at an average annual rate of +4.1% over the period from 2007-2016. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates: Italy (-8.0% per year) and Belgium (-1.8% per year).

Flax Fabric Export Prices By Country

The average flax fabric export price stood at $21 per kg in 2016, going down by -20.2% against the previous year. Overall, flax fabric export price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014, when it surged by 41% from the previous year level. Global flax fabric export peaked of $26 per kg in 2015, falling back in the following year.

Export prices varied noticeably by country of destination. the country with the highest export prices was Italy ($42 per kg), while Russia ($4,444 per tonne) was among the lowest.

From 2007 to 2016, the most notable growth rate of flax fabric export prices was attained by China, Hong Kong SAR (+6.4% per year), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
