Which Country Exports the Most Fiber-Cement Articles in the World?

In 2016, approx. 2.6M tonnes of fiber cement were exported worldwide; growing by 2% against the previous year level. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.3% over the period from 2007 to 2016; the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014, an increase of 9% against the previous year level. In that year, global fiber cement exports attained its maximum volume of 2.7M tonnes. From 2015 to 2016, growth of global fiber cement exports failed to regain its strength.

In value terms, fiber cement exports amounted to $1.2B in 2016. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +2.2% over the period from 2007 to 2016; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Global fiber cement export peaked of $1.2B in 2014; afterwards, it flattened through to 2016.

Fiber Cement Exports By Country

In 2016, Thailand (614K tonnes) was the key exporter for fiber cement, comprising 23% of total exports. Russia (218K tonnes) ranks second globally in fiber cement exports with a 8% share, following Malaysia (8%), Belgium (7%), China (6%), the U.S. (6%), and Czech Republic (5%). The following exporters - Italy (80K tonnes), India (79K tonnes), Mexico (67K tonnes), El Salvador (60K tonnes), and Colombia (49K tonnes) together made up 13% of total exports.

Exports from Thailand increased at an average annual rate of +18.3% from 2007 to 2016. At the same time, India (+21.3%), El Salvador (+14.0%), the U.S. (+7.9%), Belgium (+5.3%), Malaysia (+3.2%), and China (+2.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, India emerged as the fastest growing importer/exporter in the world, with a CAGR of +21.3% from 2007-2016. Czech Republic experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Mexico (-2.5%), Colombia (-3.8%), Italy (-5.4%), and Russia (-8.8%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Russia (11%), and Italy (2%) increased significantly, the share of El Salvador (-1.6%), Malaysia (-2.0%), India (-2.5%), Belgium (-2.5%), the U.S. (-2.9%), and Thailand (-18.2%) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Thailand ($127M), Belgium ($126M) and the U.S. ($117M) were the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2016, together accounting for 32% of global exports.

Thailand (+18.4% per year) experienced the highest growth rate of fiber cement exports, in terms of the main exporting countries, over the last 9 year period, while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Fiber Cement Export Prices By Country

The average fiber cement export price stood at $441 per tonne in 2016, lowering by -3.5% against the previous year. In general, fiber cement export price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2008, when export increased by 16% against the previous year level. Over the period under review, average fiber cement export price attained its maximum level of $500 per tonne in 2011; however, from 2012 to 2016, it failed to regain its strength.

There were significant differences in the average export prices amongst major exporting countries. In 2016, the country with the highest export prices was the U.S. ($757 per tonne), while Russia ($127 per tonne) was among the lowest.

From 2007 to 2016, the most notable growth rate of fiber cement export prices was attained by China (+8.4% per year), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
