Which Country Exports the Most Electric Locomotives in the World?

In 2016, the amount of electric locomotive exported worldwide totaled 64K tonnes, reducing by -15.3% against the previous year level. In general, electric locomotive exports continue to indicate a strong expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015, an increase of 83% year-to-year. In that year, global electric locomotive exports attained its maximum volume of 75K tonnes, falling back in the following year.

In value terms, electric locomotive exports totaled $932M in 2016. Overall, it indicated a remarkable growth from 2007 to 2016: the total exports value increased at an average annual rate of +6.3% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. Over the period under review, global electric locomotive exports attained its maximum level of $1.3B in 2010; however, from 2011 to 2016, it failed to regain its strength.

Electric Locomotive Exports By Country

China (24K tonnes) represented the major exporting country with an export of about 24K tonnes, which resulted at 38% of total exports. It was distantly followed by the Netherlands (13K tonnes), and Germany (11K tonnes), together committing 37% share of total electric locomotive exports. The UK (2.3K tonnes), Austria (1.7K tonnes), Switzerland (1.6K tonnes), France (1.4K tonnes), and Belgium (984 tonnes) held the mild share of total exports.

From 2007 to 2016, the most notable growth rate of electric locomotive exports, among the main exporting countries, was attained by the Netherlands (+87.2% per year), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Germany ($443M) remains the largest electric locomotive supplier in the world, making up 48% of global exports. The second position in the ranking was occupied by China ($120M), with the share of 13% of global exports. It was followed by Austria, with the share of 9%.

In Germany, electric locomotive exports stood at an average annual rate of +6.5% over the period from 2007-2016. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: China (+32.9% per year) and Austria (+3.0% per year).

Electric Locomotive Export Prices By Country

The average electric locomotive export price stood at $15 per kg in 2016, jumping by 74% against the previous year. In general, electric locomotive export price continues to indicate a temperate shrinkage. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016, when export increased by 74% year-to-year. Over the period under review, average electric locomotive export price reached its maximum level of $43 per kg in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2016, it stood at a somewhat lower level.

Export prices varied noticeably by country of destination. the country with the highest export prices was France ($54 per kg), while the Netherlands ($209 per tonne) was among the lowest.

From 2007 to 2016, the most notable growth rate of electric locomotive export prices was attained by France (+24.7% per year), while the other global leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.
