Which Country Exports the Most Diodes in the World?

Global diode exports totaled 2.4M tonnes in 2016, picking up by 4% against the previous year level. Overall, it indicated a strong increase from 2007 to 2016: the total exports volume increased at an average annual rate of +7.3% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. Based on the result of 2016, diode exports increased by +9.0% against its level of 2014. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2011, an increase of 26% from the previous year level. Over the period under review, global diode exports attained its maximum volume in 2016, and are likely to continue its growth in the near future.

In value terms, diode exports amounted to $99B in 2016. Overall, it indicated a strong growth from 2007 to 2016: the total exports value increased at an average annual rate of +7.3% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. Global diode export peaked of $118B in 2011; however, from 2012 to 2016, it stood at a somewhat lower level.

Diode Exports By Country

China (1.8M tonnes) prevails in diode exports structure, accounting for 1.8M tonnes, which was approx. 72% of total exports in 2016. South Korea (207K tonnes) occupied a 8% share (based on tonnes) of global diode exports, which put it in second place, following Germany (6%). The following exporters - Mexico (68K tonnes), the Philippines (60K tonnes), and the Netherlands (49K tonnes) together made up 7% of total exports.

Exports from China increased at an average annual rate of +6.1% from 2007 to 2016. At the same time, South Korea (+35.9%), the Philippines (+26.6%), Mexico (+21.7%), the Netherlands (+18.3%), and Germany (+10.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, South Korea emerged as the fastest growing importer/exporter in the world, with a CAGR of +35.9% from 2007-2016. While the share of the Netherlands (-1.6%), the Philippines (-2.2%), Mexico (-2.3%), Germany (-3.5%), South Korea (-7.9%), and China (-29.8%) decreased significantly, the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, China ($27B) remains the largest diode supplier in the world, making up 27% of global exports. The second position in the ranking was occupied by Germany ($6.2B), with the share of 6% of global exports. It was followed by South Korea, with the share of 6%.

In China, diode exports stood at an average annual rate of +11.5% over the period from 2007-2016. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Germany (+0.6% per year) and South Korea (+14.0% per year).

Diode Export Prices By Country

The average diode export price stood at $40 per kg in 2016, coming down by -6.8% against the previous year. In general, diode export price continues to indicate a perceptible drop. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2010, an increase of 29% from the previous year level. In that year, average diode export price reached its maximum level of $61 per kg. From 2011 to 2016, growth of average diode export price stood at a somewhat lower level.

There were significant differences in the average export prices amongst major exporting countries. In 2016, the country with the highest export prices was Germany ($44 per kg), while China ($15 per kg) was among the lowest.

From 2007 to 2016, the most notable growth rate of diode export prices was attained by China (+5.1% per year), while the other global leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.
