Which Country Exports the Most Derricks and Cranes in the World?

In 2016, approx. 2.2M tonnes of crane were exported worldwide; leveling off at the previous year level. In general, crane exports continue to indicate a slight drop. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2011, when export increased by 20% y-o-y. Global crane export peaked of 2.8M tonnes in 2008; however, from 2009 to 2016, it failed to regain its strength.

In value terms, crane exports amounted to $14B in 2016. In general, crane exports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. In that year, global crane exports reached its maximum level of $19B. From 2009 to 2016, growth of global crane exports failed to regain its strength.

Crane Exports By Country

In 2016, China (667K tonnes) was the main exporter for crane, generating 30% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Italy (208K tonnes), Germany (205K tonnes), and Japan (167K tonnes), together constituting 26% share of total crane exports. The U.S. (95K tonnes), Spain (87K tonnes), Austria (73K tonnes), France (49K tonnes), United Arab Emirates (49K tonnes), Singapore (48K tonnes), the Netherlands (47K tonnes), and Belgium (44K tonnes) followed a long way behind this figure.

China was also the fastest growing in terms of the crane exports, with a CAGR of +4.3% from 2007 to 2016. At the same time, Austria (+1.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. The Netherlands, Spain, and Singapore experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Belgium (-3.8%), Germany (-4.1%), France (-4.9%), Italy (-5.2%), Japan (-5.9%), the U.S. (-7.0%), and United Arab Emirates (-9.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Italy (6%), Japan (5%), Germany (4%), the U.S. (4%), and United Arab Emirates (3%) increased significantly, the share of China (-9.4%) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, China ($4.1B) remains the largest crane supplier in the world, making up 30% of global exports. The second position in the ranking was occupied by Germany ($1.5B), with the share of 11% of global exports. It was followed by Italy, with the share of 9%.

In China, crane exports stood at an average annual rate of +5.9% over the period from 2007-2016. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Germany (-4.3% per year) and Italy (-1.7% per year).

Crane Export Prices By Country

The average crane export price stood at $6,032 per tonne in 2016, descending by -7.1% against the previous year. In general, crane export price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2008, when export price increased by 24% from the previous year level. Global crane export peaked of $6,913 per tonne in 2009; however, from 2010 to 2016, it stood at a somewhat lower level.

There were significant differences in the average export prices amongst major exporting countries. In 2016, the country with the highest export prices was Austria ($10 per kg), while United Arab Emirates ($3,557 per tonne) was among the lowest.

From 2007 to 2016, the most notable growth rate of crane export prices was attained by United Arab Emirates (+7.3% per year), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
