Which Country Exports the Most Cotton Lint in the World?

Global cotton lint exports amounted to 7,200 thousand tonnes in 2015, reducing by -8.9% against the previous year level. Overall, the global cotton lint exports indicated a pronounced decline from 2007 to 2015. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticable fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The total export volume decreased at an average annual rate of -2.1% over the last eight years.

The growth pace was the most rapid in 2010, when the output figure increased by +32% from the previous year level. Over the period under review, the global cotton lint exports attained its maximum volume of 9,765 thousand tonnes in 2012. From 2013 to 2015, the total cotton lint exports growth failed to regain its strength.

In value terms, global exports amounted to $243 million in 2015. Overall, the value of global exports increased tangibly from 2007 to 2015, expanding at an average annual rate of +1.7%. This trend pattern, however, fluctuated wildly throughout the analyzed period.

Cotton Lint Imports By Country

The countries with the highest levels of the cotton lint exports in 2015 were the United States (2,397 thousand tonnes), India (1,251 thousand tonnes), Brazil (834 thousand tonnes), together accounting for 62% of total exports.

From 2007 to 2015, the most notable growth rates of cotton lint exports among the main exporting countries was attained by Brazil (+9.0% per year), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the country with the largest volume of exports of cotton lint in absolute volumes was the United States (3,890 million USD), making up 38% of global exports. The second position in the ranking was occupied by India (1,861 million USD), with a share of 18% of global exports. Moreover, cotton lint exports in the United States exceeded the figures recorded by the world's second largest importer, India (1,861 million USD), twofold. It was followed by Brazil with a share of 13%.

From 2007 to 2015, an average annual growth rate of cotton lint exports in the United States was at 0.0%. The remaining exporting countries experienced the following average annual growth rates: India (+1.6% per year) and Brazil (+12.4% per year).
