Which Country Exports the Most Copper Ores and Concentrates in the World?

In 2016, the global exports of copper ore amounted to 21M tonnes, approximately mirroring the previous year level. Overall, it indicated a prominent expansion from 2007 to 2016: the total exports volume increased at an average annual rate of +6.8% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. Based on the result of 2016, copper ore exports increased by +80.9% against its level of 2007. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2010, an increase of 17% against the previous year level. Global copper ore export peaked of 21M tonnes in 2015, leveling off in the following year.

In value terms, copper ore exports stood at $45B in 2016. Overall, it indicated a temperate growth from 2007 to 2016: the total exports value increased at an average annual rate of +6.8% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. Based on the result of 2016, copper ore exports decreased by -12.0% against its level of 2013. Over the period under review, global copper ore exports attained its maximum level of $51B in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2016, it stood at a somewhat lower level.

Copper Ore Exports By Country

Peru (3.9M tonnes), Chile (2.6M tonnes), Indonesia (1.9M tonnes), Australia (1.9M tonnes), Mongolia (1.6M tonnes), Mexico (1.3M tonnes), Brazil (1.2M tonnes), and Spain (1.1M tonnes) represented roughly 74% of total exports of copper ore in 2016. Kazakhstan (577K tonnes), Canada (482K tonnes), Armenia (403K tonnes), and Bulgaria (395K tonnes) occupied the minor share of total exports.

From 2007 to 2016, the most notable growth rate of copper ore exports, among the main exporting countries, was attained by Chile (+120.5% per year), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest copper ore markets worldwide were Chile ($13B), Peru ($8.7B) and Australia ($3.5B), together accounting for 56% of global exports.Indonesia, Canada, Brazil, Mongolia, Mexico, Spain, Kazakhstan, Armenia and Bulgaria lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 30%.

Spain (+73.7% per year) had the highest rates of growth with regard to the copper ore exports, among the main exporting countries, over the last 9 years, while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Copper Ore Export Prices By Country

The average copper ore export price stood at $2,163 per tonne in 2016, jumping by 2% against the previous year. In general, copper ore export price continues to indicate a drastic decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2010, when export price increased by 20% against the previous year level. Over the period under review, average copper ore export price attained its maximum level of $3,232 per tonne in 2007; however, from 2008 to 2016, it stood at a somewhat lower level.

Export prices varied noticeably by country of destination. the country with the highest export prices was Canada ($5,616 per tonne), while Bulgaria ($601 per tonne) was among the lowest.

From 2007 to 2016, the most notable growth rate of copper ore export prices was attained by Peru (+2.8% per year), while the other global leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.
