Which Country Exports the Most Cold-Rolled Steel Products in the World?

In 2016, the amount of cold-rolled steel exported worldwide totaled 24M tonnes, dropping by -5.0% against the previous year level. Overall, cold-rolled steel exports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2010, when export increased by 8% from the previous year level. Global cold-rolled steel export peaked of 26M tonnes in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2016, it failed to regain its strength.

In value terms, cold-rolled steel exports amounted to $12B in 2016. Overall, cold-rolled steel exports continue to indicate a significant reduction. Over the period under review, global cold-rolled steel exports attained its maximum level of $22B in 2011; however, from 2012 to 2016, it stood at a somewhat lower level.

Cold-Rolled Steel Exports By Country

In 2016, South Korea (3.8M tonnes), China (3.3M tonnes), Japan (2.7M tonnes), Belgium (1.9M tonnes), Russia (1.3M tonnes), India (1.1M tonnes), Germany (993K tonnes), the Netherlands (768K tonnes), Ukraine (716K tonnes), Italy (652K tonnes), Viet Nam (645K tonnes), and Kazakhstan (601K tonnes) represented the main exporters of cold-rolled steel in the world, creating 77% of total export.

From 2007 to 2016, the most notable growth rate of cold-rolled steel exports, among the main exporting countries, was attained by Viet Nam (+68.2% per year), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest cold-rolled steel markets worldwide were South Korea ($1.9B), Japan ($1.4B) and China ($1.3B), together comprising 37% of global exports. These countries were followed by Belgium, Germany, India, Russia, the Netherlands, Italy, Viet Nam, Ukraine and Kazakhstan, which together accounted for a further 36%.

Viet Nam (+61.0% per year) experienced the highest rates of growth with regard to the cold-rolled steel exports, in terms of the main exporting countries, over the last 9 years, while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Cold-Rolled Steel Export Prices By Country

In 2016, the average export price for cold-rolled steel amounted to $517 per tonne, lowering by -5.8% against the previous year. Overall, cold-rolled steel export price continues to indicate a perceptible reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2008, an increase of 29% against the previous year level. In that year, average cold-rolled steel export price reached its maximum level of $885 per tonne. From 2009 to 2016, growth of average cold-rolled steel export price failed to regain its strength.

There were significant differences in the average export prices amongst major exporting countries. In 2016, the country with the highest export prices was Germany ($611 per tonne), while Russia ($395 per tonne) was among the lowest.

From 2007 to 2016, the most notable growth rate of cold-rolled steel export prices was attained by Kazakhstan (-1.6% per year), while the other global leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.
