Which Country Exports the Most Clay Tiles and Roofing in the World?

In 2016, the global roofing exports amounted to 2.9M tonnes, approximately mirroring the previous year figure. Overall, roofing exports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015, when export increased by 7% from the previous year level. Global roofing export peaked of 3.2M tonnes in 2008; however, from 2009 to 2016, it failed to regain its strength.

In value terms, roofing exports amounted to $695M in 2016. Overall, roofing exports continue to indicate a temperate decrease. Global roofing export peaked of $923M in 2008; however, from 2009 to 2016, it failed to regain its strength.

Roofing Exports By Country

In 2016, Germany (679K tonnes), distantly followed by France (249K tonnes), Spain (214K tonnes), Hungary (209K tonnes), Italy (209K tonnes), Serbia (185K tonnes), and Portugal (147K tonnes) represented the largest exporters of roofing, together committing 65% of total exports. Poland (126K tonnes), China (110K tonnes), Croatia (89K tonnes), the Netherlands (76K tonnes), and Belgium (71K tonnes) followed a long way behind this figure.

Germany experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. At the same time, China (+19.2%), Spain (+8.7%), Poland (+7.4%), Hungary (+7.2%), Portugal (+3.6%), and Italy (+2.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, China emerged as the fastest growing importer/exporter in the world, with a CAGR of +19.2% from 2007-2016. Serbia experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Croatia (-1.2%), Belgium (-3.1%), France (-4.1%), and the Netherlands (-7.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2007 to 2016, the share of France, and the Netherlands increased by 4%, and 3% percentage points, while Italy (-1.6%), Poland (-2.1%), China (-3.0%), Hungary (-3.4%), and Spain (-3.9%) saw their share reduced. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Germany ($193M) remains the largest roofing supplier in the world, making up 28% of global exports. The second position in the ranking was occupied by France ($76M), with the share of 11% of global exports. It was followed by Spain, with the share of 6%.

In Germany, roofing exports decreased by an average annual rate of -3.3% over the period from 2007-2016. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates: France (-3.1% per year) and Spain (-1.7% per year).

Roofing Export Prices By Country

In 2016, the average export price for roofing amounted to $240 per tonne, going down by -2.0% against the previous year. In general, roofing export price continues to indicate a mild deduction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2011, when export increased by 8% year-to-year. Global roofing export peaked of $295 per tonne in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2016, it stood at a somewhat lower level.

There were significant differences in the average export prices amongst major exporting countries. In 2016, the country with the highest export prices was the Netherlands ($348 per tonne), while Serbia ($142 per tonne) was among the lowest.

From 2007 to 2016, the most notable growth rate of roofing export prices was attained by Belgium (+7.3% per year), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
