Which Country Exports the Most Chromium Ores and Concentrates in the World?

Global chrome ore exports stood at 14M tonnes in 2016, rising by 8% against the previous year level. Overall, it indicated a strong growth from 2007 to 2016: the total exports volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.4% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. Based on the result of 2016, chrome ore exports increased by +19.3% against its level of 2014. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013, when export increased by 16% y-o-y. In that year, global chrome ore exports reached its maximum volume of 16M tonnes. From 2014 to 2016, growth of global chrome ore exports failed to regain its strength.

In value terms, chrome ore exports totaled $2.1B in 2016. Overall, it indicated a mild increase from 2007 to 2016: the total exports value increased at an average annual rate of +4.4% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. Based on the result of 2016, chrome ore exports decreased by -32.0% against its level of 2011. Over the period under review, global chrome ore exports attained its maximum level of $3.1B in 2011; however, from 2012 to 2016, it failed to regain its strength.

Chrome Ore Exports By Country

South Africa (9.6M tonnes) dominates in chrome ore exports structure, recording 9.6M tonnes, which was approx. 67% of total exports in 2016. Turkey (1.3M tonnes) occupied a 9% share (based on tonnes) of global chrome ore exports, which put it in second place, following Kazakhstan (5%). Albania (583K tonnes), Iran (422K tonnes), Pakistan (405K tonnes), and Oman (341K tonnes) followed a long way behind this figure.

South Africa was also the fastest growing in terms of the chrome ore exports, with a CAGR of +10.5% from 2007 to 2016. At the same time, Iran (+9.4%), Albania (+5.3%), and Oman (+2.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Pakistan experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Turkey (-1.1%), and Kazakhstan (-3.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2007 to 2016, the share of Kazakhstan increased by 2% percentage points, while Albania (-1.5%), Iran (-1.6%), and South Africa (-39.9%) saw their share reduced. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($1.3B) remains the largest chrome ore supplier in the world, making up 61% of global exports. The second position in the ranking was occupied by Turkey ($245M), with the share of 12% of global exports. It was followed by Kazakhstan, with the share of 6%.

From 2007 to 2016, the average annual growth rate of value of chrome ore exports in South Africa stood at +9.6%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates: Turkey (-0.4% per year) and Kazakhstan (-6.7% per year).

Chrome Ore Export Prices By Country

The average chrome ore export price stood at $146 per tonne in 2016, reducing by -3.9% against the previous year. In general, chrome ore export price continues to indicate a temperate descent. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2008, when export price increased by 59% against the previous year level. In that year, average chrome ore export price reached its maximum level of $288 per tonne. From 2009 to 2016, growth of average chrome ore export price stood at a somewhat lower level.

There were significant differences in the average export prices amongst major exporting countries. In 2016, the country with the highest export prices was Iran ($217 per tonne), while Oman ($58 per tonne) was among the lowest.

From 2007 to 2016, the most notable growth rate of chrome ore export prices was attained by Albania (+1.7% per year), while the other global leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.
