Which Country Exports the Most Chalk and Dolomite in the World?

In 2016, approx. 1.5M tonnes of dolomite were exported worldwide; waning by -13.9% against the previous year figure. In general, dolomite exports continue to indicate a deep curtailment. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2010, an increase of 19% y-o-y. Over the period under review, global dolomite exports attained its maximum volume of 2.4M tonnes in 2007; however, from 2008 to 2016, it failed to regain its strength.

In value terms, dolomite exports stood at $116M in 2016. Overall, dolomite exports continue to indicate a drastic downturn. Over the period under review, global dolomite exports attained its maximum level of $190M in 2008; however, from 2009 to 2016, it stood at a somewhat lower level.

Dolomite Exports By Country

France (418K tonnes), and Denmark (343K tonnes) represented the main exporters of dolomite in 2016, resulting at near 28%, and 23% of total exports, respectively. Belgium (184K tonnes) took the second position in the ranking, followed by Germany (126K tonnes), and Spain (70K tonnes). All these countries together held approx. 25% share of total exports. The following exporters - Saudi Arabia (66K tonnes), the UK (36K tonnes), Greece (33K tonnes), the Netherlands (32K tonnes), Argentina (25K tonnes), Russia (24K tonnes), and Iran (23K tonnes) together made up 16% of total exports.

From 2007 to 2016, the most notable growth rate of dolomite exports, among the main exporting countries, was attained by Saudi Arabia (+143.3% per year), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest dolomite markets worldwide were France ($24M), Denmark ($19M) and Germany ($11M), together accounting for 47% of global exports.Spain, Belgium, the Netherlands, Saudi Arabia, the UK, Iran, Greece, Russia and Argentina lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 38%.

Saudi Arabia (+70.5% per year) had the highest rates of growth with regard to the dolomite exports, in terms of the main exporting countries, over the last 9 year period, while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Dolomite Export Prices By Country

In 2016, the average export price for dolomite amounted to $77 per tonne, coming up by 3% against the previous year. Overall, dolomite export price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2011, when export price increased by 19% year-to-year. In that year, average dolomite export price attained its maximum level of $89 per tonne. From 2012 to 2016, growth of average dolomite export price stood at a somewhat lower level.

There were significant differences in the average export prices amongst major exporting countries. In 2016, the country with the highest export prices was the Netherlands ($191 per tonne), while Argentina ($45 per tonne) was among the lowest.

From 2007 to 2016, the most notable growth rate of dolomite export prices was attained by the Netherlands (+11.6% per year), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
