Which Country Exports the Most Cadmium in the World?

Global cadmium exports totaled 22K tonnes in 2016, shrinking by -1.7% against the previous year level. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.9% over the period from 2007 to 2016; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015, when it surged by 16% y-o-y. In that year, global cadmium exports reached its maximum volume of 22K tonnes, falling back in the following year.

In value terms, cadmium exports amounted to $27M in 2016. Overall, cadmium exports continue to indicate a drastic curtailment. Global cadmium export peaked of $92M in 2007; however, from 2008 to 2016, it failed to regain its strength.

Cadmium Exports By Country

South Korea (6.5K tonnes) was the main exporter of cadmium in the world, finishing at 6.5K tonnes, which was near 30% of total exports in 2016. Australia (2.3K tonnes) ranks second globally in cadmium exports with a 10% share, following Kazakhstan (8%), Japan (7%), Russia (7%), Mexico (6%), Canada (5%), and the Netherlands (5%). The U.S. (774 tonnes), Peru (772 tonnes), Germany (660 tonnes), and France (397 tonnes) held the mild share of total exports.

From 2007 to 2016, average annual rates of growth with regard to cadmium exports from South Korea stood at +9.6%. At the same time, Russia (+16.1%), Germany (+12.6%), Australia (+11.1%), Kazakhstan (+10.9%), Peru (+9.3%), the Netherlands (+6.8%), Japan (+5.0%), and the U.S. (+4.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Russia emerged as the fastest growing importer/exporter in the world, with a CAGR of +16.1% from 2007-2016. By contrast, Canada (-4.0%), Mexico (-7.0%), and France (-12.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2007 to 2016, the share of Mexico, France, and Canada increased by 5%, 4%, and 2% percentage points, while Peru (-1.9%), Germany (-2.0%), the Netherlands (-2.0%), Japan (-2.5%), Kazakhstan (-4.6%), Russia (-4.9%), Australia (-6.4%), and South Korea (-16.7%) saw their share reduced. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Korea ($7.9M) remains the largest cadmium supplier in the world, making up 29% of global exports. The second position in the ranking was occupied by Canada ($2.9M), with the share of 11% of global exports. It was followed by Kazakhstan, with the share of 7%.

In South Korea, cadmium exports decreased by an average annual rate of -9.2% over the period from 2007-2016. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates: Canada (-14.3% per year) and Kazakhstan (-4.9% per year).

Cadmium Export Prices By Country

In 2016, the average export price for cadmium amounted to $1,260 per tonne, going up by 5% against the previous year. In general, cadmium export price continues to indicate a abrupt downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2010, when export increased by 23% y-o-y. Global cadmium export peaked of $5,458 per tonne in 2007; however, from 2008 to 2016, it stood at a somewhat lower level.

There were significant differences in the average export prices amongst major exporting countries. In 2016, the country with the highest export prices was Canada ($2,541 per tonne), while Australia ($377 per tonne) was among the lowest.

From 2007 to 2016, the most notable growth rate of cadmium export prices was attained by Germany (-6.0% per year), while the other global leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.
