Which Country Exports the Most Aluminium Ores and Concentrates in the World?

In 2016, the global aluminium exports amounted to 77M tonnes, surging by 8% against the previous year figure. Overall, it indicated a significant expansion from 2007 to 2016: the total exports volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.3% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. Based on the result of 2016, aluminium exports increased by +13.7% against its level of 2014. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013, when export increased by 50% against the previous year level. In that year, global aluminium exports attained its maximum volume of 116M tonnes. From 2014 to 2016, growth of global aluminium exports stood at a somewhat lower level.

In value terms, aluminium exports totaled $2.8B in 2016. Overall, it indicated a tangible expansion from 2007 to 2016: the total exports value increased at an average annual rate of +3.3% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. Based on the result of 2016, aluminium exports increased by +19.5% against its level of 2014. In that year, global aluminium exports reached its maximum level of $3.7B. From 2014 to 2016, growth of global aluminium exports failed to regain its strength.

Aluminium Exports By Country

Australia (26M tonnes), and Guinea (24M tonnes) represented the main exporters of aluminium in 2016, amounting to approx. 33%, and 32% of total exports, respectively. Brazil (10M tonnes) ranks second globally in aluminium exports with a 14% share, following Malaysia (9%). The following exporters - Jamaica (3.4M tonnes), and India (2.9M tonnes) held near 8% of total exports, each.

From 2007 to 2016, the most notable growth rate of aluminium exports, among the main exporting countries, was attained by Malaysia (+80.8% per year), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Guinea ($1.1B), Australia ($733M) and Brazil ($265M) constituted the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2016, with a combined 77% share of global exports.Malaysia, Jamaica and India lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 12%.

Malaysia (+56.2% per year) had the highest growth rate of aluminium exports, in terms of the main exporting countries, over the last 9 year period, while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Aluminium Export Prices By Country

The average aluminium export price stood at $36 per tonne in 2016, rising by 6% against the previous year. In general, aluminium export price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2012, when export increased by 13% year-to-year. Over the period under review, average aluminium export price attained its maximum level of $36 per tonne in 2008; afterwards, it flattened through to 2016.

Export prices varied noticeably by country of destination. the country with the highest export prices was Guinea ($46 per tonne), while Malaysia ($23 per tonne) was among the lowest.

From 2007 to 2016, the most notable growth rate of aluminium export prices was attained by Australia (+4.2% per year), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
