Which Country Exports the Most Alumina in the World?

Global alumina exports stood at 43M tonnes in 2016, shrinking by -2.7% against the previous year figure. Overall, alumina exports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2012, when it surged by 4% against the previous year level. Global alumina export peaked of 44M tonnes in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2016, it stood at a somewhat lower level.

In value terms, alumina exports totaled $13B in 2016. Overall, alumina exports continue to indicate a mild reduction. Global alumina export peaked of $16B in 2008; however, from 2009 to 2016, it failed to regain its strength.

Alumina Exports By Country

Australia (18M tonnes) was the main exporting country with an export of around 18M tonnes, which accounted for 42% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Brazil (9.7M tonnes), and Ireland (2M tonnes), together achieving 27% share of total alumina exports. Jamaica (1.8M tonnes), India (1.5M tonnes), Ukraine (1.5M tonnes), China (1.1M tonnes), Kazakhstan (1M tonnes), Spain (947K tonnes), Germany (911K tonnes), and the U.S. (905K tonnes) followed a long way behind this figure.

From 2007 to 2016, the most notable growth rate of alumina exports, among the main exporting countries, was attained by Brazil (+10.7% per year), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Australia ($4.2B), Brazil ($2.4B) and Germany ($671M) constituted the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2016, together accounting for 58% of global exports.

Brazil (+7.0% per year) recorded the highest growth rate of alumina exports, among the main exporting countries, over the last 9 year period, while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Alumina Export Prices By Country

The average alumina export price stood at $297 per tonne in 2016, going down by -12.4% against the previous year. Overall, alumina export price continues to indicate a moderate deduction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2010, when export price increased by 16% y-o-y. Over the period under review, average alumina export price reached its maximum level of $387 per tonne in 2011; however, from 2012 to 2016, it stood at a somewhat lower level.

Export prices varied noticeably by country of destination. the country with the highest export prices was Germany ($737 per tonne), while Australia ($237 per tonne) was among the lowest.

From 2007 to 2016, the most notable growth rate of alumina export prices was attained by China (+5.1% per year), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
