Which Country Consumes the Most Wine in the World?

Global wine consumption amounted to 28,607 thousand tonnes in 2015, remaining stable against the previous year level. Overall, the global wine consumption indicated a pronounced growth from 2007 to 2015. The trend pattern, however, remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The total consumption volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.6%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013, when the output figure increased by +6% from the previous year level. Over the period under review, the global wine consumption attained its maximum volume of 28,729 thousand tonnes in 2014. From 2015 to 2015, the total wine consumption growth failed to regain its strength.

Global Wine Consumption

In 2015, the countries with the highest consumption were Italy (3,630 thousand tonnes), France (3,629 thousand tonnes), the United States (3,481 thousand tonnes), together mixed up 34% of total consumption. They were followed by Spain with a 10% of global consumption share and China with a 7% share.

From 2007 to 2015, the most notable growth rates of wine consumption among the main consuming countries was attained by Italy (+5.3% per year), while the other global leaders experienced mixed trends in the consumption figures.

The highest levels of wine per capita consumption was registered in Spain (70.57 kg/year), followed by Italy (60.71 kg/year), France (56.35 kg/year), the United States (10.82 kg/year) and China (1.62 kg/year), while the average per capita consumption of wine was estimated at 7.19 kg/year in 2015.

In Spain, per capita wine consumption has grown noticably (+5.4% per year) in recent years. In 2015, Spain per capita consumption reached 70.57 kg/year as compared with 46.39 kg/year in 2007.
