Which Country Consumes the Most Tea in the World?

Global tea consumption amounted to 5,671 thousand tonnes in 2015, growing by +5.2% against the previous year level. Overall, the global tea consumption indicated a pronounced growth from 2007 to 2015. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticable fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The total consumption volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.7%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2012, when the output figure increased by +10% from the previous year level. Over the period under review, the global tea consumption reached its maximum volume in 2015, and is likely to continue its growth in the immediate term.

Global Tea Consumption

In 2015, the countries with the highest consumption were China (1,956 thousand tonnes), India (1,041 thousand tonnes), Turkey (223 thousand tonnes), together making up 55% of total consumption. They were followed by Iran with a 3% of global consumption share and Pakistan with a 3% share.

From 2007 to 2015, the most notable growth rates of tea consumption among the main consuming countries was attained by China (+10.2% per year), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The highest levels of tea per capita consumption was registered in Turkey (2.84 kg/year), followed by Iran (2.49 kg/year), China (1.39 kg/year), Pakistan (0.86 kg/year) and India (0.79 kg/year), while the average per capita consumption of tea was estimated at 0.66 kg/year in 2015.

In China, per capita tea consumption has grown noticably (+9.6% per year) in recent years. In 2015, China per capita consumption reached 2.84 kg/year as compared with 0.67 kg/year in 2007.
