Which Country Consumes the Most Persimmons in the World?

Global persimmon consumption amounted to 5,420 thousand tonnes in 2015, surging by +4.4% against the previous year level. Overall, the global persimmon consumption indicated a pronounced growth from 2007 to 2015. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticable fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The total consumption volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.8%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2011, when the output figure increased by +10% from the previous year level. Over the period under review, the global persimmon consumption reached its maximum volume in 2015, and is likely to continue its growth in the immediate term.

Global Persimmons Consumption

With nearly 3,939 thousand tonnes, China became the world’s leading persimmon consuming country, accounting for 74% of global consumption. The other major consumers were the Republic of Korea (421 thousand tonnes) and Spain (266 thousand tonnes), with a share of 8% and 5%, respectively. Moreover, persimmon consumption in China surpassed the figures recorded by the Republic of Korea ninefold. They were followed by Japan with a 4% of global consumption share and Brazil with a 4% share.

From 2007 to 2015, an average annual growth rate of persimmon consumption in China stood at +5.3%. The remaining consuming countries recorded the following average annual growth rates: the Republic of Korea (+0.8% per year) and Spain (+18.8% per year).

The highest levels of persimmon per capita consumption was registered in the Republic of Korea (8.37 kg/year), followed by Spain (5.77 kg/year), China (2.80 kg/year), Japan (1.76 kg/year) and Brazil (0.94 kg/year), while the average per capita consumption of persimmon was estimated at 2.71 kg/year in 2015.

In Spain, per capita persimmon consumption has grown noticably (+18.5% per year) in recent years. In 2015, Spain per capita consumption reached 8.37 kg/year as compared with 1.48 kg/year in 2007.
