Which Country Eats the Most Oranges in the World?

Global orange consumption amounted to 71,416 thousand tonnes in 2015, coming up by +1.6% against the previous year level. Overall, the global orange consumption indicated a moderate growth from 2007 to 2015. The trend pattern, however, remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The total consumption volume increased at an average annual rate of +0.9%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2008, when the output figure increased by +4% from the previous year level. Over the period under review, the global orange consumption reached its maximum volume in 2015, and is likely to continue its growth in the immediate term.

Global Oranges Consumption

In 2015, the countries with the highest consumption were Brazil (16,405 thousand tonnes), India (9,017 thousand tonnes), China (8,435 thousand tonnes), together accounting for 45% of total consumption. They were followed by the United States with a 7% of global consumption share and Mexico with a 7% share.

From 2007 to 2015, the most notable growth rates of orange consumption among the main consuming countries was attained by China (+11.0% per year), while the other global leaders experienced mixed trends in the consumption figures.

Per capita orange in Brazil was estimated at 78.93 kg/year, much higher than the global average of 10.25 kg/year. Brazil was the leading country in terms of per capita consumption, among the main consumers of orange, followed by Mexico (39.73 kg/year), the United States (16.08 kg/year), India (6.88 kg/year) and China (5.99 kg/year).

In China, per capita orange consumption has grown noticably (+10.5% per year) in recent years. In 2015, China per capita consumption reached 78.93 kg/year as compared with 2.70 kg/year in 2007.
