Which Country Consumes the Most Melon Seeds in the World?

Global melon seed consumption amounted to 894 thousand tonnes in 2015, rising by +6.1% against the previous year level. Overall, the global melon seed consumption indicated a pronounced growth from 2007 to 2015. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticable fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The total consumption volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.3%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2010, when the output figure increased by +16% from the previous year level. Over the period under review, the global melon seed consumption reached its maximum volume in 2015, and is likely to continue its growth in the immediate term.

Global Melon Seeds Consumption

With nearly 553 thousand tonnes, Nigeria became the world’s leading melon seed consuming country, mixed up 54% of global consumption. The other major consumers were Sudan (former) (177 thousand tonnes) and Democratic Republic of the Congo (62 thousand tonnes), with a share of 17% and 6%, respectively. Moreover, melon seed consumption in Nigeria surpassed the figures recorded by Sudan (former) threefold. They were followed by Sudan with a 5% of global consumption share and Cameroon with a 4% share.

From 2007 to 2015, an average annual growth rate of melon seed consumption in Nigeria stood at +1.5%. The remaining consuming countries recorded the following average annual growth rates: Sudan (former) (+27.1% per year) and Democratic Republic of the Congo (+1.0% per year).

The highest levels of melon seed per capita consumption was registered in Sudan (former) (4.41 kg/year), followed by Nigeria (3.04 kg/year), Cameroon (1.97 kg/year), Democratic Republic of the Congo (0.80 kg/year) and Sudan (0.00 kg/year), while the average per capita consumption of melon seed was estimated at 1.36 kg/year in 2015.

In Sudan (former), per capita melon seed consumption has grown noticably (+28.0% per year) in recent years. In 2015, Sudan (former) per capita consumption reached 4.41 kg/year as compared with 0.61 kg/year in 2007.
