Which Country Consumes the Most Maize Oil in the World?

Global maize oil consumption amounted to 2,943 thousand tonnes in 2015, falling by -7.7% against the previous year level. Overall, the global maize oil consumption indicated a pronounced growth from 2007 to 2015. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticable fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The total consumption volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.2%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014, when the output figure increased by +37% from the previous year level. In that year, the global maize oil consumption attained its maximum volume of 3,189 thousand tonnes, falling back in the following year.

Global Maize Oil Consumption

With nearly 2,044 thousand tonnes, the United States became the world’s leading maize oil consuming country, accounting for 59% of global consumption. The other major consumers were China (287 thousand tonnes) and Turkey (237 thousand tonnes), with a share of 8% and 7%, respectively. Moreover, maize oil consumption in the United States surpassed the figures recorded by China sevenfold. They were followed by Brazil with a 3% of global consumption share and South Africa with a 2% share.

From 2007 to 2015, an average annual growth rate of maize oil consumption in the United States stood at +7.3%. The remaining consuming countries recorded the following average annual growth rates: China (+4.0% per year) and Turkey (+24.1% per year).

Per capita maize oil in the United States was estimated at 6.35 kg/year, much higher than the global average of 0.78 kg/year. United States of America was the leading country in terms of per capita consumption, among the main consumers of maize oil, followed by Turkey (3.01 kg/year), South Africa (1.51 kg/year), Brazil (0.46 kg/year) and China (0.20 kg/year).

In Turkey, per capita maize oil consumption has grown noticably (+22.2% per year) in recent years. In 2015, Turkey per capita consumption reached 6.35 kg/year as compared with 0.61 kg/year in 2007.
