Which Country Eats the Most Lemons And Limes in the World?

Global lemon and lime consumption amounted to 15,230 thousand tonnes in 2015, coming down by -6.3% against the previous year level. Overall, the global lemon and lime consumption indicated a moderate decline from 2007 to 2015. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticable fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The total consumption volume decreased at an average annual rate of -0.8%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014, when the output figure increased by +7% from the previous year level. Over the period under review, the global lemon and lime consumption attained its maximum volume of 17,226 thousand tonnes in 2009. From 2010 to 2015, the total lemon and lime consumption growth failed to regain its strength.

Global Lemons And Limes Consumption

In 2015, the countries with the highest consumption were India (3,106 thousand tonnes), Mexico (2,273 thousand tonnes), China (2,265 thousand tonnes), together mixed up 45% of total consumption. They were followed by Argentina with a 8% of global consumption share and Spain with a 7% share.

From 2007 to 2015, the most notable growth rates of lemon and lime consumption among the main consuming countries was attained by India (+3.8% per year), while the other global leaders experienced mixed trends in the consumption figures.

The highest levels of lemon and lime per capita consumption was registered in Argentina (30.10 kg/year), followed by Spain (27.57 kg/year), Mexico (17.89 kg/year), India (2.37 kg/year) and China (1.61 kg/year), while the average per capita consumption of lemon and lime was estimated at 4.20 kg/year in 2015.

In Spain, per capita lemon and lime consumption has grown noticably (+11.9% per year) in recent years. In 2015, Spain per capita consumption reached 30.10 kg/year as compared with 11.21 kg/year in 2007.
