Which Country Consumes the Most Karite Nuts in the World?

Global karite nut consumption amounted to 616 thousand tonnes in 2015, growing by +12.7% against the previous year level. Overall, the global karite nut consumption indicated a pronounced decline from 2007 to 2015. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticable fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The total consumption volume decreased at an average annual rate of -2.9%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015, when the output figure increased by +13% from the previous year level. Over the period under review, the global karite nut consumption attained its maximum volume of 777 thousand tonnes in 2007. From 2008 to 2015, the total karite nut consumption growth failed to regain its strength.

Global Karite Nuts Consumption

With nearly 358 thousand tonnes, Nigeria became the world’s leading karite nut consuming country, mixed up 55% of global consumption. The other major consumers were Mali (151 thousand tonnes) and Burkina Faso (43 thousand tonnes), with a share of 23% and 7%, respectively. Moreover, karite nut consumption in Nigeria surpassed the figures recorded by Mali twofold. They were followed by Ghana with a 5% of global consumption share and Côte D'Ivoire with a 5% share.

From 2007 to 2015, an average annual growth rate of karite nut consumption in Nigeria stood at -2.1%. The remaining consuming countries recorded the following average annual growth rates: Mali (-2.3% per year) and Burkina Faso (-5.4% per year).

The highest levels of karite nut (shea nut) per capita consumption was registered in Mali (8.60 kg/year), followed by Burkina Faso (2.38 kg/year), Nigeria (1.97 kg/year), Côte D'Ivoire (1.40 kg/year) and Ghana (1.27 kg/year), while the average per capita consumption of karite nut (shea nut) was estimated at 2.68 kg/year in 2015.

In Côte D'Ivoire, per capita karite nut (shea nut) consumption has grown with a negative paces of growth (-1.1% per year) in recent years. In 2015, Côte D'Ivoire per capita consumption reached 8.60 kg/year as compared with 1.53 kg/year in 2007.
